The Lutheran Center (national office) is located in Chicago, Illinois. A staff of approximately 400, under the leadership of the Presiding Bishop, serve as administrators, advisors, conveners, partners, and resource people for the ELCA and its ministries. Staff lead the work of national, domestic, and global ministries and programs including Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger, Service & Justice, Christian Community and Leadership, and Innovation. We are also home to five of our separately incorporated ministries: The Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, Women of the ELCA, Lutheran Men in Mission, the ELCA Foundation and the ELCA Federal Credit Union.
About The Position
The Development team within the Office of the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA Churchwide Organization is responsible for engaging donor members from across the ELCA ecology. Through Mission Support and Stewardship, Annual Giving, Institutional Giving, Transformational Giving, and the Development Services team, the Development team seeks to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors of all kinds as they support the variety of ministries the ELCA does as church together.
This position is responsible to implement and coordinate fundraising and communication between global personal and supporters, including the missionary covenant program, developing fundraising-related training for new missionaries and young adults in global mission (YAGM), reporting progress towards goals to the directors of these programs, and developing a retention strategy for these donors.
This position is also responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding philanthropic support of the priority fundraising objectives from individuals for annual support. The Development Specialist will manage a portfolio of donors and congregations giving $1000-$9,999 per year and be responsible for cultivating and reaching annual fundraising goals.
This is a full time, regular, remote position.
The eligibility of a candidate for remote or hybrid positions may depend on the residency of the candidate, and the budget for the role, including salary or pay, insurance coverage, and/or tax burden. Candidates for this position must reside within the fifty United States or the District of Columbia and be authorized to work lawfully in the United States. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

  • Implement ELCA global mission personnel sponsorship programs by coordinating communications with congregations and individuals and missionary covenant solicitation and stewardship; serving as a subject matter expert, and managing development channels for global mission personnel and Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) including peer-to-peer platforms; curating missionary and YAGM fundraising data and information in ECIS; reporting progress towards goals to program directors, and working with donors with gifts supporting these ministries. Serve as prospect manager and/or plan manager for congregations and individuals with missionary covenant to cultivate, solicit, and steward these relationships.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150-200 mid-level donors and congregations (including missionary covenant congregations) to cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts in the mid-level giving range ($1,000-$9,999 annually) supporting the fundraising priorities of the churchwide organization.
  • Develop and implement donor retention plans supporting missionaries and YAGM, including proactively communicating with donors when missionaries end service with alternative giving opportunities, ensuring all gifts designated to missionaries are updated in a timely fashion when transitions are announced including updating online giving pages and other giving resources, and developing a solicitation strategy for YAGM donors following a YAGMs year of service.
  • Facilitate storytelling efforts of global mission personnel, ensuring they understand the connection between their effective storytelling and fundraising. Communicate updates from the global mission personnel with the development team regularly and proactively through sharing stories in the development team newsletter, providing updates at development team meetings, and ensuring newsletters and updates are readily accessible to the team, and being a resource to development team members to provide updates on specific missionaries and/or country/region specific work.
  • Ensure timely reports are available to program directors and support evaluation of the progress towards fundraising goals for missionaries and YAGMS. Coordinate the reporting covenants and giving to missionaries for home assignment visits.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience in a related field. Bachelors degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated success in achieving fundraising goals.
  • Proven relationship-building skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse constituencies. Ability to develop collaborative relationships across various departments, units, and expressions of the church.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.), CRM or other donor management systems.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, vision, values, and goals of the ELCA.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Christian stewardship.
Physical
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. Travel
Some travel. Position requires some overnight, domestic travel by plane or car for global mission personnel events or as required by the position. Valid drivers license preferred.
