The pay rate for an entry-level Ultrasound Technologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital is: $44.50/hr.
Thursday, Friday, 2:30 pm - 1:00 am. Hours are flexible.
Job Summary
OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision and following established procedures, selects proper imaging techniques, operates ultrasound-imaging equipment to acquire images and provide an initial interpretation of exam to the physician in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Staff will be required to float among radiology clinics associated with BWH as needed.
Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures that two points of patient identification is obtained, that patient is properly prepared, and obtains a relevant patient history. Reviews the patients chart to obtain pertinent clinical history, test results and laboratory data as they apply to accurate interpretation of the ultrasound examination.
- Explains exam to the patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.). Delivers patient care under scope of license/training
- Utilizes universal precaution techniques as well as safety techniques specific to the patients status.
- Performs Ultrasound studies on premature infants in an intensive care unit. Is knowledgeable about illnesses related to this patient population and the various types of care being provided to them.
- Be knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment to be used during the workday. To notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed
- Rotates within department, divisions and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department
- Maintains effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.
- Execute paperwork, PACS, RIS, and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam.
- Prepare the equipment, room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and supply room and general department area as needed.
- May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department.
- To acknowledge and participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department
- To assume all responsibilities for on-call coverage and to remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary. (not applicable to Ultrasound at this time).
- Remain up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment. To participate in education programs and meet state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.
- Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.
- Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.
- Perform all other duties as directed.
- Must have graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months full time clinical ultrasound experience.
- Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
- Must become registered in all the institutions accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Second specialty within second year of employment. Additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.
- Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patient who may be under physical and/or emotional stress
- Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.
- Work requires several weeks training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.
- Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
- Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
- Must be physically capable of lifting. (linen, supplies, patients, etc.)
- A comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System for registering patients.
- Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
- Must be aware of hazards within the department, adhere to safety standards established by Brigham & Womens Hospital and other regulatory agencies (large magnetic field, ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.).
