Definition:
Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, assists in the management and supervision of the general operation of the aquatic's facility, while performing the responsibilities of a swim coach and lifeguard.

Essential Job Duties :
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
  • Designs, organizes, executes and maintain workout programs for both the novice and masters swim programs.
  • Maintains attendance and other related operations and financial records, prepares written reports and submits recommendations to the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Responds to questions and inquiries from the general public in a professional manner.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication, coordination, and working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Assists in conducting and participating in various training sessions.
  • Communicates with aquatic staff. Including swim school staff, lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Maintains pool grounds and aquatic equipment used during training sessions and events, and assures pool facility is maintained in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
  • Administers First Aid, CPR/AED, or rescuing swimmer(s), completes as needed.
  • Enforces pool rules, regulations and standards of safety within City policies and guidelines and in accordance with State health codes and the United States Swimming regulations.
  • Completes any/all required report after witnessing or providing assistance/care for any/all situations.
  • Oversees the maintenance of pool, including chemical balance, flow/filtration, heater/solar, etc.
  • Guards on deck, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
  • Incumbent may work irregular schedules including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability :
Knowledge of:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • America Red Cross Swim Coach Certification.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction Certification.
  • USA Swim Coach Head Coach certification ADM Age group certification for young swimmers.
  • USA Swim Coach Head Coach certification ADM Age group certification senior development swimmers.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Perform physical water test indicating competence of rescuing skills.
  • Stay alert and attentive and assert good judgment.
  • Remain patient and understanding in dealing with patrons of all ages.
  • Maintain open lines of communication.
Training and Experience :
  • Three years of previous aquatics experience is required.
  • Three years of assisting coaching novice and adult/master swim programs and workouts.
  • Experience teaching/instructing swim lessons of all ages and skill levels.
  • Aquatic experience and participation in swimming for club, high school, college and/or master programs.
Supplemental Information
Licenses and Certificates:
  • American Red Cross lifeguard current certification is required and to be maintained.
  • America Red Cross swim coach current certification is required and to be maintained.
  • American Red Cross water safety instruction current certification is required and to be maintained.
  • American Red Cross certificates in First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguarding is to be current certification is required and to be maintained.
  • All certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment and all certifications as currently required by USA swimming and the City must be maintained.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :
  • Requires ability to stand, stoop, reach, and bend.
  • Required mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate.
  • Requires ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Requires ability to lift, push, or pull.
  • May require water rescues, with First Aid and/or CPR/AED as needed.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of City employment.
  • May be required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.

This position is a temporary position and not eligible to participate in any benefit programs of the City, except those mandated by federal or state law.
Must participate in a PARS Alterantive Retirement System 457 Plan as a replacement for Social Security.
