Quality Systems Expert

Reporting to a Research Scientist 3, the incumbent of this position will be the foremost expert on quality systems, methodologies and testing of a laboratory, and ensure medical and adult use cannabis products that are tested for cannabinoid profile, terpene content, and contaminants of concern. Duties include but are not limited to: Perform quality assurance activities of regulated parties including laboratory regulatory audits, sampling firm inspections, and desk audits of methodologies or standard operating procedures used by laboratories and sampling firms. Review initial (new) and renewal or reapproval applications for laboratories and sampling firms, ensuring their staff, owners, and policies and procedures meet Part 130 requirements and laboratory and sampling firm standards and guidance. Conduct research on best practices to test cannabis for physical and inorganic chemistry analytes such as moisture content, water activity, and filth, foreign materials, and metals. Develop and amend physical and inorganic chemistry standards, policies, and procedures for quality and product safety. Conduct research and make recommendations on novel physical or inorganic chemistry testing methods and instrumentation to approve for use by permitted labs in a timely manner. Conduct research and make recommendations on removing or adding physical or inorganic analytes to the required testing list of permitted analytes, as well as amending any physical or inorganic chemistry testing limits in a timely manner. Collaborate with staff and with State Reference Laboratory, about the review physical or inorganic chemistry discrepancies between and among permitted labs. Report quality issues and trends to direct supervisor and unit director in a timely manner of laboratory regulatory audits, sampling firm inspections, and desk audits of methodologies and standard operating procedure. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NYHELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position. A bachelor's degree* in medical technology, or a chemical or biological science, AND three years of post-bachelor's professional experience in a laboratory that tests clinical specimens or environmental samples, or tissue bank, or blood bank or physician practice. *Substitution: a master's degree in one of the bachelor's degree fields may substitute for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree in one of the bachelor's degree fields may substitute for two years of professional experience. Applicants may also be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title.
