Job Description Firefighter/Paramedic Fire Rescue Department 48 hours weekly (shift work: 24 hours on 48 hours off) Extra pay incentive for water rescue team members and inspectors. Qualification and Experience Preferred candidate must: Be a U.S. citizen High school diploma or GED equivalent Hold current certification as a Firefighter in the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute, Chapter 633.34 Be a certified Paramedic in the State of Florida in accordance with the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services Rules and Regulations 64J and in accordance with Florida Statute, Chapter 401 Possess a valid State of Florida driver's license without record of DUI arrest, reckless driving charges, suspension or revocation in any State, within the last three years Certification in Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVOC/CEVO) Have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the last seven years Be tobacco-free for twelve months prior to position appointment and remain tobacco free during your employment Be able to pass a physical agility test Be able to pass a swim test Be able to pass a ladder climb test Be able to pass a medical examination Be able to pass a thorough background check Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying or stretching hose lines, performing fire combat, forcible entry techniques, ventilation techniques, and containment and extinguishment tasks Responds to and assist in other special operation incidents such as water rescue, high angle rescue, confined space rescue, heavy rescue/collapse Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials and related subjects Operates radio and other communications equipment Utilizes appropriate safety equipment under extremely hazardous conditions of high heat, toxic gases, explosive chemicals, radioactive materials, moving or stagnant water, heights, confined spaces and infectious diseases Performs emergency aid and paramedic activities including administering first aid, basic life support, advanced life support and other related assistance as required Accurately and appropriately document all emergency medical care activity on proper forms and as required by law Provides emergency ambulance transportation to area hospitals when necessary Properly collects and disposes of infectious waste generated at emergency scenes Performs strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, smoke, confined spaces or wet conditions Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities apparatus and equipment Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics Conduct duties efficiently, including written correspondence, development of spreadsheets, operation of database programs and computer data entry Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Sound working knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques and equipment Sound working knowledge of first aid, basic, and advanced life support resuscitation techniques and their application Demonstrated ability to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques Demonstrated ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to follow verbal and written instructions Demonstrated ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations Ability to frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift/move more than 100 pounds Ability to report to duty for a declared state of emergency (hurricane, flood or other disaster) as this is a requirement of the job May be expected to perform other related duties as required by proper authority.
