Bilingual Community Programs Educator II
As a Community Programs Educator, you will support program development and prepare and facilitate Outdoor Adventures - experiences in nature that nurture learning about self, others, and the urban world for audiences of all ages. Outdoor Adventures occur primarily outside and includes paddling, biking, hiking, fishing, and more. Duties & Responsibilities Support development of ongoing, series-based programs such as our youth outdoor exploration program and seasonal group offerings, birthday parties, and adventure days. Assist in writing lesson outlines for programs that serve families, teens, youth, and adults using environmental education principles, inquiry, and outdoor engagement techniques. Assist in writing lesson outlines for urban adventure programs that focus on introductory and intermediate skills for activities such as paddling, hiking, biking, and fishing in alignment with our Urban Adventures Procedures Manual. Adapt provided Urban Ecology Center Community Programs curriculum/lesson outlines as needed for specific audiences or groups. Meet all deadlines for program plans and ensure all content is appropriately stored for individual and organizational use. In collaboration with the Director of Community Programs, support creating program plans for large UEC events. Program Facilitation & Delivery Provide one-of-a-kind informal environmental education programming and experiences that inspire youth, teens, adults, and families to continue building connections to each other, to nature, and to the city. Communicate with group coordinators/leaders about scheduling and program logistics via email or phone. Welcome, lead, and close experiences by speaking in front of large groups of varied audiences. Prepare all activity materials, program spaces, and gear for experiences scheduled. Maintain inventory of program supplies. Maintain Safety Practices Obtain Red Cross lifeguard certification training and serve as a lifeguard for all paddling and water sports programming. (training paid by UEC) Adhere to all Urban Adventure program procedures as laid out by the Urban Ecology Center Community Programs Department and Safety Committee. Anticipate, prevent, identify, and respond to safety issues. Department Support/General Tasks Maintain a detailed schedule of availability and work plans. Utilize the Altru database to enter program attendance, check rosters, gather email or contact information, and sell program sign-ups. Work with staff, teens, organization partners, and adult volunteers to plan and offer special events. Work closely with seasonal staff, interns, and high school outdoor leaders to deliver programs and grow in their abilities as programmatic staff. To be successful in this position, you will demonstrate the following competencies: Bilingual English/Spanish: The ability to develop and teach programs in both English and Spanish is required. Required Qualifications: At least 2 years of teaching experience working in an outdoor education program, camp, or nature-based instruction setting. First Aid/CPR/Lifeguard Certification, or the ability to obtain. Preferred Qualifications: Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or related coursework in adventure education, natural sciences, youth development, or related area is recommended. Certified Interpretive Guide, Project Wet and Project Wild/ Flying Wild Certified, Wisconsin Master Naturalist or Certified Park and Recreation Professional is preferred. What does a typical workday look like? Condition & Location: Open office workspace with an active team atmosphere; using shared workspaces at all three UEC locations. Time spent outdoors, in all types of seasonal weather. Our community programs team spends at least 75% of their time outdoors, the work environment will be dependent on weather conditions. Time spent in a classroom, working with groups of people of all ages. In this role, you will need to efficiently travel between branches and external program locations throughout the work day. Weekly hours: 40 hours per week Schedule: Tuesday-Thursday: 10am-6pm, Fridays: 9am-5pm, Saturdays 9am-3pm Evening and weekend hours will be a regular part of the schedule and are required. Equipment Used: Computer: Google Suite, Zoom telephone, & Slack. Office-specific: copy machine, paper cutters, AV Equipment. Outdoor and recreational equipment, including but not limited to kayaks, canoes, canoe/kayak paddles, pedal boats, fishing poles and tackle, mountain bikes, bicycle helmets and bike locks. Science education supplies, including but not limited to microscopes, insect nets, cooking supplies. 14 passenger vehicles or trucks with attached trailers for canoes or kayaks. Physical Requirements: Lifting bikes 3 feet out of a bike rack or vehicle. Team-lifting canoes from storage racks to activity locations. Hiking, biking, walking, or paddling for a full day- up to 6 hours. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation. Ability to build and work near campfires, outdoor open flames in a contained fire ring. Ability to sit, stand, crouch, and bend on a regular basis. Team and Supervision: As a member of the Community Programs team, you will be managed by the Director of Community Programs. Though all of our teams work together in some capacity, you will most frequently collaborate with fellow Community Programs team educators and program facilitators, the Data and Program Coordinator, Environmental Educators, and other Members of the Education and Ecology Team area. In this role, you will have the opportunity to join Circles or Committees as your schedule and interests allow. All UEC team members should expect interaction with volunteers, members, and youth participants. Organizational Support: All team members of the Urban Ecology Center work a minimum of 1-2 weekend or evening events each year. Our events are a great way to engage with our communities and see our mission in action; examples include Urban Candlelight Hike, Autumn Celebration, and HKE MKE. Some roles may have increased responsibility for event leadership. All team members are asked to support our building hours by providing building coverage, which may include opening/closing the building, communicating with staff on-site, and welcoming visitors or guests.
