Job Description

The Vice President of Development is a key executive leader at The Exodus Road, responsible for designing and driving the fundraising strategy that fuels the mission around the globe and throughout the United States. This person must be both a visionary and an executor-someone who can lead a team, cast a compelling vision for resourcing the movement, and also pick up the phone, close major gifts, and cultivate lasting donor relationships.

With a primary focus on corporate fundraising and major gifts, the VP of Development will oversee a multi-channel fundraising strategy that includes household giving, foundation grants, federal funding, organization-wide campaigns, and capital initiatives. Reporting to the COO, this position is fully accountable for hitting organizational revenue goals (currently $5M annually) and managing the development team, strategy, and budget.

Job Responsibilities:

Executive Leadership & Strategy Serve on the Executive Team and contribute to high-level planning and vision-setting. Build and execute a multi-year fundraising strategy aligned with organizational growth goals. Champion a culture of philanthropy internally and externally, inspiring partners to invest in frontline impact. Build and lead a healthy fundraising team of professionals.

Hands-On Fundraising Execution Personally manage and steward a portfolio of major donors and corporate partners. Lead solicitation efforts, including calls, proposals, donor visits, and presentations. Represent the organization at high-level meetings and networking events to build partnerships. Represent the organization through public speaking events, as needed.

Donor Pipeline Ownership Develop and implement strategies for acquisition, cultivation, and retention across multiple donor pipelines, including: Major donors Corporate sponsorships and partnerships Private foundations Federal and Institutional funding Mid-level donors and household giving Peer-to-peer campaigns and donor events Capital campaigns (as needed)

Team Leadership & Collaboration Lead and develop a high-performing fundraising team, including team members focused on donor relations, partnerships, grants, and events. Provide coaching, accountability, and clarity on goals, timelines, and responsibilities. Work cross-functionally with Marketing, Finance, Programs, and Grants to ensure aligned messaging and accurate reporting.

Accountability & Performance Create and oversee systems for tracking progress toward fundraising goals, donor engagement, and team performance. Establish clear KPIs and performance dashboards for each pipeline and team member. Maintain a professional, high-accountability fundraising culture focused on both relationship-building and results. Manage the Development Department budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and strong ROI on fundraising efforts. Report regularly to the COO and executive leadership on progress toward revenue goals.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising and development. At least 5 years in a senior or executive leadership role managing people, strategy, and revenue pipelines. Proven ability to close major gifts and develop corporate fundraising initiatives. Experience managing fundraising across multiple revenue streams, including foundation, corporate, federal, mid-level, and grassroots. Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills. Highly relational with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience managing a departmental budget and meeting revenue targets. Familiarity with CRM systems (Virtuous preferred) and data-driven fundraising strategies. Deep passion for social justice, human rights, and the mission of The Exodus Road. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (15-30%). Proven demonstration of the organizational values of The Exodus Road.
