A Brief Overview
Processes tissue specimens for the preparation of microscopic slides necessary for Histologic diagnosis of disease
What you will do Properly identifies accessions and stores specimens according to Laboratory policy. Fixes, Processes, embeds and cuts surgical tissue specimens for staining and slide preparation for examination by pathologist according to Laboratory policy. Assists pathologist with preparation of frozen section specimens and gross tissue examinations. Performs special stains and immunohistochemical stains for examination by pathologist. Performs routine checks for instruments prior to use for proper functioning and cleanliness. Maintains and performs minor repairs on equipment. Maintains slide and block files and records according to Laboratory policy. Instructs nursing personnel or other health care worker, in obtaining and handling of specimens. Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories Maintains and prepares sufficient quantities of reagents and supplies. Follows departmental procedure for specimen handling and processing, and maintains records of procedures performed. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Meets productivity standards established by the department. Recognizes discrepancies or problems affecting the procedures and notifies and supervisor or pathologist on a timely basis. Operates all instruments according to accepted written protocols. Recognizes and identifies instrument problems. Contacts appropriate technical service representative or Clinical Engineering when necessary. Utilizes Powerpath computer system to review/ completion of workflow. Follows Standard Precautions, formaldehyde/xylene and hazardous reagent safety. Dispose waste reagents appropriately according to established safety protocols. Stores waste reagents safely until disposal by private hauler. Assist in orientation and instruction of new employee or laboratory personnel. Maintains confidentiality of patient information and complies with established communications code. Keeps current in the field of histology through literature, attendance at workshops, in-service programs and participation in quality improvement program by professional organizations. Cooperates with lab staff to achieve lab goals and maintains good employee relations, interdepartmental relations and public relations. Maintains safe working environment. Performs other related duties as requested.
Education Qualifications Associate's Degree with related Histology experience or Bachelor's Degree in Biology Preferred
Experience Qualifications 1-3 years Required
Licenses and Certifications ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist HT (ASCP) certification Preferred
