Organizational Overview
Democracy Defenders Action (DDA) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to defeating election sabotage and denial, fighting autocracy, and building a resilient democracy. DDA also provides general administration for a group of related independent entities including Democracy Defenders Fund (c3), Democracy Defenders PAC, and Democracy Defenders Projects–the home for the new media entity, The Contrarian. We were founded to counter the authoritarian threat to our democracy. Democracy Defenders Action was founded in 2023 by Ambassador Norm Eisen (ret.), alongside other leading figures in democracy defense, elections, and law. DDA launched the Contrarian in 2025. It is being led by Eisen and new Editor-in Chief, Jen Rubin.
Role Summary
The Contrarian, one of the fastest-growing pro-democracy publications in the United States, seeks a creative, detail-oriented Digital Communications Associate to join our growing team. The Contrarian is a reader-supported initiative that platforms some of the brightest minds and most respected experts—legal scholars, historians, civil rights leaders, political activists, creatives, policymakers, and journalists—to help shape the response to growing authoritarian threats at home and abroad. The position requires the ability to adapt to breaking news and new developments on issues the organization is tracking, experience drafting messaging materials, and thriving in fast-paced environments.
Responsibilities
Draft engaging, platform-specific copy that promotes The Contrarian brand and highlights contributor content.
Schedule and manage editorial content across multiple platforms for an audience of 800,000+ followers.
Edit articles to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with editorial standards.
Create compelling graphic promotional materials for articles, events, and initiatives.
Streamline and document social media workflows and organizational processes.
Assist in coordinating video production and podcast initiatives.
Assist in producing original video content from concept to delivery.
Collaborate closely with editorial and creative teams to ensure cohesive brand storytelling and audience engagement.
Monitor and maintain audience engagement, responding to comments and fostering an active online community.
Other tasks as needed.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
1-3 years of communications experience, social media management, content strategy, or digital marketing.
Experience working across departments within an organization and/or with external partners.
Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with an ability to tailor tone and format for different platforms.
Proficiency in graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and basic video editing software.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Eager to learn and incorporate feedback.
Reliable and adaptable to changing priorities.
Strong commitment to protecting American democracy.
Proximity to Washington, D.C. is preferred, although the position is remote and may be performed from any state in the U.S. Optional in-person meetings take place semi-regularly in D.C. Work is expected in the evenings and on weekends.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000, plus benefits, including a generous PTO policy. This is a non-exempt position.
