The executive team of the Probation Department is seeking to establish an eligible list with qualified leaders within the department who are committed to exemplifying and enhancing the core values of the department in the role of
Deputy Chief Probation Officer.
The Deputy Chief Probation Officer position is the third-highest-ranking executive-level position in the department, with responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing the activities of one or more of the major divisions of the department, including Administrative Services, Juvenile Services, Adult and Pre-Trial Services, and Institutions Divisions. The Deputy Chief Probation Officer also provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Assistant Chief Probation Officer and/or the Chief Probation Officer, and acts as theAssistant Chief Probation Officer and/or the Chief Probation Officer in his/her absence.

Provide highly responsible administrative and management assistance to the Assistant Chief Probation Officer and/or the Chief Probation Officer, by planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing all functions and activities of one or more divisions within the department. Direct, supervise, and guide assigned departmental staff by establishing goals, policies, and performance standards, conducting periodic evaluations for the staff members' performance, and counseling staff members regarding their performance and career development consistent with the departmental mission and expectations. Consult with and advise other County staff and the public regarding probation policy issues and participate in the development of standards and programs relating to these policies. Consult and cooperate with other department managers and outside criminal justice personnel on all aspects of probation services; discuss problems, develop alternatives and strategies for dealing with those problems; assist in the implementation of solutions, as necessary. Direct and counsel divisional staff in the planning, resource allocation, budgeting and record systems needed to meet the department's responsibilities. Assist in the preparation and administration of the departmental budget. Perform a variety of special assignments, prepare complex analytical and statistical reports for the assigned division, as assigned. May act as the ACPO or CPO in his/her absence. Perform related duties as assigned. Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Experience :Five years of increasingly responsible experience performing a wide variety of duties related to probation management, including one year in a senior-level administrative or management position.
Knowledge of: All aspects of probation administration, including appropriate methods, procedures, and technical expertise. Pertinent state and federal laws and regulations regarding probation services. Organizational, administrative, and management principles and practices. Supervisory techniques, resource allocation, planning, and budgeting. Basic math skills.
Skill/Ability to: Learn the County's operations and organizational structure. Direct and coordinate all aspects of the assigned division. Understand and evaluate statistical data and reports related to probation management. Interpret, apply, and explain County policies and state and federal legislation related to probation services. Establish and evaluate policies, procedures, and controls related to the County's probation programs. Represent the Department under diverse circumstances and prepare and deliver oral presentations to small and large groups. Effectively and persuasively communicate both orally and in writing. Identify existing or potential problems, secure relevant information relating to data from a variety of sources, determine probable cause(s), and effect appropriate solution(s). Successfully monitor budgets and expenditures. Accurately assess and communicate the staffing needs of one or more divisions. Utilize appropriate interpersonal style and methods of communication to gain acceptance, cooperation, or agreement of a plan, activity, and/or program idea. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Other Requirement: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States by federal law. Must be eligible to be employed as a peace officer pursuant to Section 1031 of the California Government Code. Must successfully pass a background investigation prior to employment. Must successfully complete the Manager Administrative Core Course within one year of hire date. Departmental Promotional Only.

Probation Department with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%), which may include a pre-interview written exercise and oral presentation. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
