As we expand our portfolio and operations in key markets like Chicago and Dallas, we are seeking a seasoned leader to oversee and elevate our construction execution. Position Summary: The
Director of Construction Operations
will be responsible for the overall performance, efficiency, and execution of all construction projects. This leader will drive operational excellence, ensure project delivery meets scope, schedule, and budget goals, and oversee field and project management teams. This is a key leadership role supporting GMA's continued growth and operational scale. Key Responsibilities: Client & Stakeholder Leadership Serve as the primary executive liaison to clients, ensuring strong, lasting relationships and client satisfaction. Identify and develop new business opportunities while securing repeat clients. Build and maintain trusted relationships with subcontractors. Lead the selection and onboarding of qualified partners to meet project goals and align with long-term company strategy. Act as the escalation point for all project-related issues, including schedule delays, staffing challenges, financial discrepancies, and client or subcontractor conflicts. Negotiate resolutions, including change orders and fee adjustments. Lead and manage all construction operations, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Provide executive-level oversight for multiple project teams across regions, including project managers, superintendents, engineers, and field staff. Organizational Leadership & Strategy Collaborate with senior leadership to define strategic direction. Develop and implement the best practices and operational policies to drive company performance and growth. Work closely with the COO and senior leadership on strategic planning, resource allocation, and long-term operational improvements. Assist with the development, implementation, and refinement of standard operating procedures and project delivery systems. Monitor and manage operational KPIs, including project profitability, schedule adherence, change order ratios, and safety performance. Support preconstruction efforts, including budgeting, scheduling, constructability reviews, and subcontractor strategy. Partner with HR and leadership to recruit, train, and retain high-performing construction talent. Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and safety standards across all job sites. Travel, on occasion, to project sites in Chicago, Dallas, and other markets as required. Qualifications 20+ years of progressive experience in construction management, with at least 10 years in a senior operational leadership role. Proven success in managing complex, multi-million-dollar commercial construction projects, ideally within affordable housing, healthcare, or education. Strong understanding of project financials, scheduling, field operations, and risk management. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams in a growing organization. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills. Highly organized, adaptable, and results-oriented in a fast-paced environment. Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field; advanced degree or certifications (e.g., PMP, CCM, LEED) a plus.
