Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy seeks a dynamic, mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its senior leadership team. The CFO will serve as a strategic partner to the President and Board of Directors, ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the school and overseeing all aspects of financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting with integrity, transparency, and a deep respect for the people and the mission we serve. The CFO is responsible for stewarding the school's financial resources and assets, ensuring compliance, advancing strategic initiatives, and helping shape the vision for the next century of Catholic Dominican education on the Hill. Key Responsibilities: Work with the school President and senior leadership team as a strategic partner to help shape and execute the school’s multi-year fiscal strategy and direction, and proactively identify actions that drive growth, profitability, increased market share, enhanced operational efficiencies, and productivity. Develop and implement an annual budget, including headcount strategy and budget summaries. Oversee the physical operation of the school, collaborating with Director-Facilities, including building and grounds maintenance, housekeeping, and capital expenditures. Lead, manage, and develop the school’s finance and accounting organization, driving continuous process improvements across the function, including: employee payroll/benefits, accounts receivable, accounts payable, vendor selection, general ledger, annual budget, annual external audit processes, endowment administration, and rental properties. Lead, oversee, and manage the development of key financial and operational metrics and dashboards to support executive decision-making and drive accountability, in alignment with the school’s mission and strategic priorities. Establish scalable processes for budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning, optimizing cash flow, and liquidity planning. Provide data-driven scenario analysis and modeling to support strategic decisions and business planning. Lead management and board-level financial reporting, including the preparation of timely and accurate dashboards, budgets, forecasts, financial plans, and department updates. Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board. Cultivate and maintain banking, investment, and insurance relationships, ensuring the school’s assets are prudently managed. Serve as primary liaison for external financial partners. Monitor and report on the performance of the endowment and other invested funds in accordance with the Board’s Investment Policy Statement. Monitor Accounts Receivable and follow up on delinquent accounts Participate and complete industry surveys – DASL, NAIS, NBOA, & CAIS Monitor Accounts Receivable and follow up on delinquent accounts. Develop monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, Budget to Actual analysis, pertinent Dashboards, monthly Cash Flow projection, and Department Budget updates. Manages auxiliary programs, including food service. Accounting and Compliance Ensure compliance with GAAP, oversee annual audits (financial and 403(b) plan), and prepare all required filings, including the IRS Form 990 and 5500. Supervise all Business Office functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, purchasing, and financial aid administration. Work with the Business Office team on the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close.
Employee Support Benchmark and manage compensation and benefit structures to remain competitive and sustainable. Work with the school leadership team, participate in the annual performance review process, including staff outreach survey of intent to return, self-assessment form, and performance reviews for select staff who report to this position.
Facilities and Capital Projects Collaborate with the Director of Facilities to manage short- and long-term capital planning and budgeting. Participate in the planning and execution of campus renovations, deferred maintenance, and construction projects. Negotiate and manage contracts related to construction, facilities, technology, and campus operations. Review and track contracts and budgets for large improvement projects and ongoing department budget spending.
Tuition, Financial Aid, and Advancement Collaboration Support admissions and advancement teams in ensuring financial systems and reporting are accurate and mission-aligned. Oversee the tuition assistance process and work with the Financial Aid Committee to award aid in accordance with school policy. Partner with Institutional Advancement to support donor stewardship and accurate financial tracking of restricted and unrestricted gifts.
Risk Management and Policy Review Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. Oversee liability and insurance policies, risk mitigation strategies, and confidential data security. Report on current risk issues, including legal, safety, insurance, etc., as well as presenting insurance policies for renewal and approval to the President Conduct annual reviews of school policies in collaboration with legal counsel and school leadership. Coordination with attorneys (LCW) when necessary, reviewing legal issues, investigations, and documentation. Monitor for the school’s compliance with legal guidelines and policies. Administer contracts & legal documents.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. CPA and/or MBA Minimum five years of proven leadership experience as a CFO or in a senior financial management role. Experience in an independent school or nonprofit organization is a plus. Demonstrated experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets, endowments, capital projects, and financial aid programs. Expertise in financial compliance, forecasting, reporting, audits, and strategic planning. Knowledge of federal/state regulations, labor laws, and nonprofit best practices. Proficiency with financial software, budgeting tools, and Microsoft Office Suite and ability to quickly learn new platforms to improve efficiency. Superior interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Integrity, sound judgment, a sense of humor, and a heart aligned with the school’s mission. Must be able to pass a background check with no criminal record
