Part-Time Telecommunicator
to support our emergency communications team. In this essential position, you'll serve as the first point of contact during critical situations-delivering calm, clear, and accurate information when every second counts.
As a Part-Time Telecommunicator, you'll handle a variety of emergency and non-emergency calls, utilizing computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems to coordinate timely responses. You'll also assist in maintaining detailed records and supporting documentation, ensuring smooth operations and public safety.
Essential Functions
Operates emergency communication systems to receive and process complaints and service requests. Gathers critical information and dispatches appropriate emergency personnel. Provides callers with guidance or refers them to the appropriate agency or contact. Accesses and relays information from the DCI/NCIC system to support law enforcement operations. Monitors the status and safety of law enforcement, fire, rescue, and EMS personnel via radio communications. Monitors public and private fire and security alarm systems. Assists with address assignments, road sign installation, and updates to the 911 addressing system. Provides direct logistical and operational support to the Emergency Management Team in times of disaster and major incidents. Maintains accurate computerized communication logs and reports. Thorough knowledge of two-way radio communication systems and their operation Proficiency with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and related computer functions Familiarity with radio codes and teletype procedures Strong knowledge of local geography, including roads, landmarks, and key facilities Accurate and efficient data entry skills at a reasonable speed Clear and distinct verbal communication skills Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure and during high-stress situations Competence in operating standard office equipment, data entry tools, and communication consoles Willingness and ability to learn and apply new technologies and procedures in emergency communications Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public Education and Experience Moderate experience in telecommunications, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

The Wellness Center is open M-W-F 8am-12pm and 1pm-4pm and T-TH 8am-12pm. The Wellness Center is a partnership between Transylvania County and the City of Brevard. County Employees and dependents on the medical plan over the age of 7 may use the Wellness Center for all services at no cost. Service is provided by calling 828-884-3115 to make an appointment. Time away from your work location to visit the Wellness Center is not charged to leave. Services include routine bloodwork monitoring, allergy injections, monitoring chronic illnesses, manage and authorize prescriptions, coordinate referrals, school physicals and testing for flu, mono and strep. Payroll & Banking Benefits Electronic Payroll Deposit: County employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis, totaling 26 pay periods each year. Paychecks are distributed through secure ACH direct deposit, available to all banks and credit unions. Deposits are scheduled so that funds are accessible by Friday morning on each payday.
