The Department
The mission of the Department of General Services is to provide quality services that support City departments in a manner which enable them to carry-out their community missions; to provide these services in a cost-effective and efficient manner which best serves the operational needs of City departments and the community. Responsibilities of the General Services Department include Airport Administration, Building Maintenance, Central Services, Cultural Arts Center Administration, Custodial, Fleet Services, Graffiti Abatement Program, HVAC / Electrical, and Warehouse.
The Position
Custodians perform routine cleaning duties, maintaining City buildings in a clean, orderly and secure condition. This position cleans offices, conference and meeting rooms; moves or sets up furniture, files and other office equipment; and operates various types of powered floor maintenance equipment. Custodians also wash windows and walls; dust furniture, woodwork, and fixtures; raise and lower flags on City buildings; maintain security, and keep City buildings locked during non-working hours.
Note: Custodians will be assigned to work day or night shifts and must be available to work rotating and varying shifts. This position provides an opportunity for overtime work when available.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Education and Experience:
Applicants must be able to read well enough to follow directions for the safe use of a wide variety of cleaning materials and equipment.
License and/or Certificates:
A valid California Class C driver's license.
Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • A strong work ethic;
  • A work history of stability, reliability, dependability, punctuality, and flexibility;
  • A self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision;
  • The ability to be proactive and search out projects; and
  • Willingness to work in a physically active environment.

Crafts and Trades employees** shall receive longevity pay in the following manner:
7 YOS: 2.5% above base pay.
11 YOS: 5% above base pay
15 YOS: 7.5% above base pay
19 YOS: 10% above base pay

Permanent Part-Time Employees (Sec. 2.8)
Permanent part time employees working 20 hours or more per week are entitled to all benefits. Accrual of time and money shall be ½ the amount received by full-time employees.

Uniforms (Sec. 4.11)
$80 each 6 months**: Telecommunications Techs, Wireless Techs, and Water Tech III incumbants (acting in capacity of Water Quality Inspectors)
$225 each 6 months**: Bus Operator, Transit Dispatchers, Police Services Officer and Animal Control Officer.
**Payable during June and December of each year
Tool Allowance (Sec. 4.12)
$250 every 6 months*: (Mechanic, Senior Mechanic, and Senior Welder)
$175 tool and educational material allowance**: Animal Control Officer
$100 one-time reimbursement: Mechanic or Senior Mechanic required to use metric tools (upon proof of purchase)

Safety Shoes (Sec. 4.14)
$125 allowance: every six (6) months of employment payable during June and December of each year for employees required to wear safety shoes
$250 allowance: per year for Animal Control Officer payable during September
Deferred Compensation (sec 4.15)
457 Plan: Enrollment is voluntary.
Upon completion of year one, employees receive a non-matching deferred City contribution of $300 ($11.54 per pay period) per calendar year.
