The Scenic Painter position reports to the Production Manager at Emerson Stage and will oversee all scenic painting duties for scenic elements designed and produced for Emerson Stage and the Department of Performing Arts Theatre productions. This is an important role that requires accuracy, attention to detail, and good teaching abilities. It is a 10-month position.

Compensation: $52,000.00 - $62,450.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Meet the needs of each production in consultation with the Production Manager and Director of Theatre Operations as well as the other department heads
- Advise and actively instruct students involved in co-curricular theatre, film, and video production work in scene painting techniques.
- Manage day-to-day operations in the paint shop, tracking paint materials used for productions
- Monitor and maintain production and shop supplies budgets.
- Schedule, train, and supervise student employees.
- Manage workflows on multiple simultaneous projects.
- Recommend over-hire as needed and appropriate.
- Participate in the planning and execution of Emerson Stage productions and select VMA film and television productions.
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Monitor paint stock inventory and account for inventory used on each project.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety policies, codes, and regulations, including, but not limited to, Hazard Communication, hazardous waste management, and Boston Fire Regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree in Fine Arts preferred
- 3-5 years of professional-level work experience in scenic painting shops or academic theatre, film set, industrial painting environments or freelance work required
- Experience in teaching and supervising staff required
- Valid driver's license required
- Proficiency in scenic (foam) sculpture
- Proficiency in painting trompe l'oeil and faux surfaces and textures for stage and screen
- Ability to produce painted, illusionistic 3D, or physical 3D surface coatings
- Ability to evaluate and introduce new or alternate painting tools and materials
- Proficiency in using a variety of computer software, including, but not limited to, AutoCAD, Photoshop, SketchUp, MS Office, and G Suite
- Ability to learn new computer software easily
- Self-starter with good interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Good attention to detail required
- Ability to read and detect color-coding will be expected
- The ability to follow oral and written instructions and to verbally communicate with co-workers
- This position is very active in nature, continuous movement throughout the area is required.
- Repetitive movements, frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds, reaching, pushing, stooping, climbing, and the ability to detect color-coding and read will be expected.
- This position works in a paint shop and theatre environment
- Exposed to loud noise levels of equipment, including table saws, routers, etc.
- Exposed to dust, oils, chemicals, and fumes
- Exposed to vibration and moving mechanical parts
- May occasionally work in a confined space with heights
- May occasionally be required to wear a respirator
