The Charles George VAMC currently has 1 (one) opening for a Pharmacy Technician with the Pharmacy Service Line. This position provides support to all pharmacy operations in a variety of settings. Pharmacy technicians at this level can work autonomously and use independent judgement to perform a full range of duties. The work schedule is INTERMITTENT and based on the needs of the Service. Responsibilities include: Reading and interpreting prescriptions from the veteran electronic health record systems (EHRS) or in written format. Reviewing prescription orders for technical accuracy. Preparing medications and ensuring the orderable item matches the item being dispensed regarding drug, strength, quantity, or appropriate supply item. Dispensing medications following all regulations, policies, and procedures for safe medication distribution. Using Automatic Dispensing machines (ADM) to batch and label medications. Assisting with automated or manual inventory processes that include but are not limited to inventory counts, medication ordering, stocking, checking for outdates, pulling outdates, pulling recalled medications, inspections or any other activity related to the supply of VA medications. Maintaining a safe orderly and clean working environment. Other duties as deemed necessary by the pharmacy supervisor. Work Schedule: Intermittent: As needed, 7:00a-3:30pm, 7:30am-4:30pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, 1:30pm-12:00am, 7:00pm-7:30am. Telework: Not Available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications: Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Certification: Must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) OR National Health-Career Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). Education or Experience: None required. Grade Determinations: GS-7: Experience: In addition to Basic Requirements candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Certification: Must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: (a) PTCB as a CPhT. OR (b) NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) in addition to meeting the demonstration of the following KSAs: Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases. Preferred Experience: Sterile compounding processes. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, typing, walking distances within the medical center, lifting/carrying (up to 40 pounds) of pharmaceutical supplies, and bending/stooping/stretching. Education Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
