Staff Accountant
The Staff Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for assisting Finance Department in multiple accounting duties, i.e. journal entries, reconciliation, and organizing support documents related to NPAIHB's Accounts Payable, Payroll, Contracts & Grants, and in accordance with the NPAIHB Finance Manual. The position collaborates closely with the Controller, Grants Fund Manager and other staff in the maintenance and administration of the finance department's financial systems. This position is based at NPAIHB's offices in Portland, Oregon. Essential Functions Responsible for Accounting General Ledger Functions Prepare Payroll and related Journal entries as assigned Reconcile the 941 to the payroll reports and trial balance on a quarterly basis Prepare month end journal entries and other journal entries as assigned Assist in review and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts as needed Assist with the reconciliation of outstanding bank account items Performs system maintenance and testing for accounts payable and purchasing. Assist with accounting for NPAIHB's grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts Assist with correspondence to Project Directors and other staff with open PO reports Reconciliation of contract payments and contract summary reports as needed Work with Accounts Payable Specialist and Grant Fund Manager as necessary, to review coding of Accounts Payable and Payroll, assuring allowability of costs and correct allocation to cost centers Monitor contract payments through system reports and random testing of payments Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner Other Duties Reconcile travel reports as needed Assist in coordination of internal and external audits Collaborate with Controller and Grant Fund Manager in Monthly and Year-end closings Support Finance team and staff as needed Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Executive Director or designee Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field or equivalent experience Experience Three or more years of GL accounting experience is required Three or more years of experience with advanced accounting software applications is required
Sage Intacct preferred Additional experience preferred: Proficiency with Sage Intacct system Experience working with federal, state and private grants, cooperative agreements and contracts Experience with G/L reconciliation Direct experience working with Northwest Tribes Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge, discretion, tact, judgment, and overall ability in working effectively with Tribal, federal and state representatives. Proficiency with computer applications (specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office Suite programs) Excellent analytical skills Excellent interpersonal skills Excellent writing and grammar skills Must be sensitive to cross-cultural differences, and able to work effectively within their context Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercise initiative, and make independent decisions and recommendations Ability to complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner Must be able to travel Probationary Period External applicants must agree to serve a minimum six-month probationary period during which time their employment can be terminated at will. For the purpose of evaluating job performance, internal applicants must agree to serve a minimum six-month probationary period when job duties change significantly. Work Conditions Physical Demands Frequently involves sedentary work (exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body) Occasionally involves light work (exerting up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force and/or a negligible amount of force to move objects) Physical Requirements Consistently requires the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and expressing or exchanging ideas or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly Constantly requires working with fingers, rather than the whole hand or arm Constantly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time Occasionally requires ascending or descending stairs or ramps using feet and legs and/or hands and arms Occasionally requires raising objects from a lower to a higher position, or moving objects horizontally Occasionally requires stooping, which entails the use of the lower extremities and back muscles Infrequently requires crouching Typical Environmental Conditions The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions. Travel Requirements Travel is generally not required for this position. However, there may be some local travel to a training or meeting.
