Environmental Health & Safety Technician III
Under the administrative direction of the Assistant Director, Occupational Safety & Health, Field Services, proper completion of annual fire extinguisher inspections and maintenance, properly maintain records, and oversee monthly fire extinguisher inspections on behalf of the F&S Safety & Compliance (S&C), Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSH). Duties & Responsibilities
Install, inspect, maintain and tag portable fire extinguishers in accordance with UIUC policies and procedures, the requirements of NFPA 10 and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) regulations. Review work orders. Maintain fire extinguisher data and inspection records in the designated information management system. Document changes to fire extinguisher locations so maps can be updated in CAD by others. Supervise Environmental Health & Safety Technicians I, II, and Students that will be responsible for monthly inspections of fire extinguishers as required by NFPA in base budget buildings, assisting with annual fire extinguisher inspections and maintenance as needed, and creating/updating fire extinguisher location maps in CAD. Maintain liaison with fire extinguisher contractor to facilitate pickup and delivery of maintained extinguishers, purchase of new extinguishers and associated products, and assistance with inspections if necessary. Verify fire extinguisher contractor invoices are accurate with services and products provided. Perform other duties as assigned including: supporting departmental safety initiatives and programs; ensuring shop tools and equipment are functioning properly and personnel are well trained on how to use the equipment; providing inspection and maintenance schedules to the Director of Safety & Compliance for the development of annual budget projections and replacement schedules, and annual budget projections; operating a university vehicle to travel between work locations for duties such as attending meetings and performing inspections; supporting the Purpose, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services; and pursuing professional development activities to expand knowledge, maintain technical expertise and keep abreast of relevant scientific and professional developments in occupational safety and health; assisting with the initiation and maintenance of positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and fire department personnel in the cities of Champaign and Urbana. Minimum Qualifications
1. Any one or any combination totaling eighteen (18) months from the following categories: A. college course work in environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months) B. work experience that required environmental health and safety knowledge and skills. 2. Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience providing technical support in an environmental health and safety role. 3. Possession of a State of Illinois Class D driver's license, if required by the position. 4. Possession of a State of Illinois Commercial Driver's License, with a hazardous materials endorsement, prior to completion of the probationary period, if required by position. 5. Eligible to obtain approval by a medical practitioner to wear a respirator, if required by the position. Preferred Qualifications
Possession of a current National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors portable fire extinguishers certification at the time of interview, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position. Appointment Information
The Environmental Health & Safety Technician is a 100% full-time Civil Service position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The salary range for this classification is $55,000-$60,000 annually.
