Deputy - Law Contract (Court Security Officer - Circuit Court) (No SORP)

Job Summary
Attention: All applicants for the Deputy Sheriff position are required to complete the Personal History Statement prior to selecting "apply" which can be found at the link below. This is a special deputy position responsible to provide law enforcement services for St. Mary's County in accordance with all applicable statutes and laws. The primary responsibility will be for prompt and proper action in all matters pertaining to Circuit Courthouse security and related duties. Essential Functions
Responsible for prompt and proper action in all matters pertaining to Circuit Court security and related duties; Searches courtrooms prior to court commencing, during court recesses and at the conclusion of the court docket; Conducts physical interior security checks of the Circuit Courthouse, to include but not limited to: court rooms, meeting spaces, holding cells, office spaces, and restrooms; Conducts physical exterior perimeter security checks of the Circuit Courthouse; Monitors persons within the Circuit Courthouse and on the exterior perimeter, via surveillance from within the Central Security Room; Facilitates access as appropriate to controlled areas of the courthouse from within the Central Security Room; Maintains radio communications with the assigned Central Security Room Officer; Operates metal detector/security devices and x-ray scanning machine; Observes spectators, witnesses, victims, and defendants to prevent or quell any disturbances that may occur on courthouse property; Maintains a position within the courtroom during court proceedings to ensure safety of the judge/magistrate, jury, and all other persons within the courtroom; Takes charge of defendants ordered to pay court costs or takes into custody persons directed by the court to be incarcerated until turned over to a transporting officer; Maintains control of any prisoners in their custody; May transport prisoners to and from the court as needed; Carries out orders and directives of the Judge; Completes court paperwork and serves processes when necessary; Detains persons suspected of committing crimes; Successfully completes all agency and MPCTC required training to maintain certification as a law enforcement officer; This position is designated as non-essential personnel during inclement weather and other emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic understanding of Circuit Courthouse security operations and procedures. Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary's County Government policies and procedures; Knowledge of the Office of the Sheriff policies and procedures; Ability to use and maintain firearms and related police issued equipment; Ability to effectively communicate with other staff and especially members of the public; Ability to make decisions in accordance with established federal, state and local laws; Ability to apply departmental policies to daily work problems; Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; Ability to work independently on tasks and maintain records; Ability to plan, organize, and execute complicated and continuing assignments accurately, with minimum instruction or review; Effective business English, grammar, legal terminology, and math skills. Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED. Six (6) years or more of related experience. Additional Requirements:
Must be 21 years of age, possess a valid Maryland driver's license and be a U.S. citizen; Must pass physical agility test, polygraph, physical and psychological examination, drug screen and successfully pass extensive background investigation with favorable results; Weight must be in proportion to height, body frame and age; Vision must be correctable to 20/20; Must possess a valid Law Enforcement Certification from the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) or had been certified within the last three years and eligible for re-certification; Candidates who have an out-of-state law enforcement officer certification must be eligible for, and successfully complete, a Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission approved Comparative and Compliance program upon hire. Must successfully pass an annual State-mandated physical agility assessment, a biennial State-mandated mental health assessment, and any other State-mandates for continued employment; Supervision:

Work demands occasional strenuous effort. For example, handling of moderately heavy boxes, moderately heavy tools, equipment, materials, or persons. An employee may be required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled. This position requires the wearing of a Kevlar vest and when needed, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and/or a Gas/Protective mask. The employee schedule may be altered depending upon needs within the Circuit Courthouse, to include arriving earlier than the scheduled arrival time, or remaining later than the scheduled departure time with little to no notice.
