Highway Patrol Electronic Technician 1

Under the direction & guidance of higher-level Highway Patrol Electronic Technician, clean, install, repair, and maintain basic electronic & communication equipment:

  • Install all RF mobile & portable electronic equipment (i.e., radios, portables, Vehicle Repeater System (VRS)), various electronic equipment (i.e., emergency light bar, deck lights, corner lights, in-car video system), various wiring harnesses (i.e., control cables, antenna co-ax, Division approved wire harnesses, etc.), various storage boxes, trays, consoles &/or cages into Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) staff vehicles, Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) vehicles, &/or vehicles for other state agencies, which may contain secured ammunition &/or firearms;
  • Perform final inspection of all items listed above & on all electronic equipment installed in vehicles for accuracy & completeness;
  • Test, repair, &/or refurbish electronic equipment & various wiring harnesses (i.e., control cables, wire harnesses consoles, trays, storage boxes, lights, sirens & other electronic equipment used on &/or in patrol cars; etc.); Repair electronic testing equipment used for monitoring & adjusting;
  • Monitor & correct any frequency modulations & power output according to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules & regulations;
  • Log repairs performed & adjustments to equipment per FCC guidelines;
  • Assist in preparing required reports;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

18 mos. exp. in installation, repair & workings of mobile communication equipment or vehicular electronics; for positions requiring travel, must possess & maintain valid driver's license per Section 4507.02 (A)(1) of Revised Code. -Or completion of 2 yr. technical program in electronics or radio communications; for positions requiring travel, must possess & maintain valid driver's license per Section 4507.02 (A)(1) of Revised Code. -Or completion of associate core program in electronic engineering; for positions requiring travel, must possess & maintain valid driver's license per Section 4507.02 (A)(1) of Revised Code. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above. Note: To meet the minimum qualifications through completion of a 2 yr. technical program, applicants must be able to verify that the technical program consisted of a minimum of 21 credit hours upon completion. UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to high voltages, inclement weather, dust, dirt, fumes, loud & constant noise; exposed to mosquitoes, rodents, wasps & poisonous snakes at remote tower sites; installations & repairs require working in confined spaces such as under vehicle dashboards & in vehicle trunks; on call 24 hrs; 7 days per week.

This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency (OAC 123: 1-46-01 & DAS Directive HR-D-11). This position will be required to report for duty during any public safety emergency.

  • A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
  • A comparative analysis and/or drug-test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
  • This position is subject to Federal Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) regulations that prohibit someone to carry, transport, or otherwise possess firearm(s) and/or ammunition from consuming marijuana, including medical marijuana.
