Construction Underwriter
with expertise in
budget analysis, feasibility assessment, and construction risk evaluation . This role is critical in ensuring that every construction loan we fund is backed by realistic budgets, achievable timelines, and sound project execution plans. You will work closely with the credit team, loan processors, and draw management to underwrite construction budgets, validate contractor bids, and assess the overall viability of each project before and after funding. Key Responsibilities Budget Analysis & Feasibility Review and validate construction budgets, contractor bids, and project timelines. Conduct
feasibility studies
to determine if proposed projects can be completed on budget and within schedule. Compare costs against industry benchmarks and regional construction pricing. Identify potential construction risks (cost overruns, delays, permitting issues) and propose mitigation strategies. Evaluate borrower’s construction experience, financial strength, and vendor/contractor reliability.
Work with underwriters, credit team, and capital partners to ensure budgets align with loan structures. Communicate findings to loan officers and management with clear recommendations.
Ongoing Project Support Partner with draw management to review draw requests against approved budgets. Monitor project progress and flag any variance from approved plans.
Qualifications Must-Haves 5+ years
in construction loan underwriting, construction project management, or related role. Strong knowledge of residential and/or light commercial construction processes, costs, and timelines. Experience in budget analysis, feasibility studies, and risk assessment. Ability to read and interpret plans, specs, and construction contracts. Excellent analytical and communication skills. Nice-to-Haves Private money lending or mortgage underwriting experience. Familiarity with local building codes, permitting, and inspection processes. Proficiency in Excel and construction cost estimation software.
