Strategic Leadership & Vision
Lead the development and execution of a year-round communications strategy aligned with APIAVote’s organizational goals, elections calendar, policy and program priorities. Collaborate closely with senior leadership and program directors (Field, Policy, Youth, and Development) to ensure communications reflect and amplify the organization’s mission and vision. Amplify APIAVote's position as the national authority on AAPI voters and civic engagement by working closely with both local and national partners to deliver incisive narratives on the impact and perspectives of the AAPI community. Manage long-term communications planning for presidential cycles, off-cycle elections, and policy rapid response. Directly manages two (2) full time staff to execute and measure impact metrics of day-to-day communication tactics and objectives. Media Relations and Public Engagement
Serve as APIAVote’s primary media strategist and liaison. Build and maintain relationships with reporters, influencers, and AAPI-serving outlets on both the national and local levels. Secure earned media through op-eds, interviews, press statements, and media advisories. Support APIAVote spokespeople, surrogates, and community leaders with talking points and media training. Develop rapid response capabilities for policy developments affecting AAPI communities. Digital Strategy and Narrative Messaging
Work closely with digital agencies to oversee the creative vision and development of multilingual digital ad campaigns targeting AAPI voters around key elections. Oversee the management of the organization’s digital channels (website, email, social media), ensuring content is timely, accessible, and engaging. Manage editorial calendar and supervise content production (newsletters, graphics, videos, toolkits, educational materials) as part of the department’s daily operations, and for major campaigns around National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), National Voter Education Week (NVEW), early voting, Election Day, and other calendar priorities. Direct translation and cultural adaptation of print and online materials into 10+ AAPI languages (Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hindi, Bengali, and others) and ensure resonant messaging through local partner collaborations. Transform complex policy and research into clear, accessible content — including via presentations, infographics, and social toolkits. Campaign Planning and Management
Lead communications for voter mobilization initiatives in coordination with local, state and national partners. Develop creative briefs and messaging guidance for outreach targeting AAPI voters and demographics, such as ethnicity groups, youth, women, and underrepresented AAPI communities. Build and maintain relationships and collaborate across partner networks and support influencer engagement efforts to amplify campaign visibility and reach. Collaboration and Supervision
Manage communications staff, consultants, and vendors to execute deliverables efficiently. Collaborate with Field, Policy, and Youth teams to translate research and community feedback into communications strategies. Provide communications training and support to APIAVote’s partner organizations across the country. Work with and provide strategic guidance on fundraising and development related communications with the development team and Deputy Director. Measurement and Evaluation
Monitor communications metrics (engagement, reach, press hits, ad performance) to evaluate impact and inform future strategy. Use insights from testing and analytics to refine targeting and messaging, particularly for limited-English proficient and low-propensity voters.
Qualifications:
7+ years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, or advocacy campaigns, with at least 3 years in a senior role. Demonstrated success leading communications strategies and/or campaigns for civic engagement, voting rights, or political advocacy. Deep knowledge of AAPI communities, cultural fluency across ethnic subgroups, and experience with multilingual/multicultural campaigns. Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across formats and audiences. Proven ability to manage press relationships and secure earned media. Leadership experience supervising cross-functional teams and collaborating across departments and organizations. Strong people and project management skills. Experience with digital ads, social media strategy, and working with designers, videographers, and content creators. Ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Commitment to APIAVote's mission of promoting civic participation in AAPI communities. Understanding of democratic participation and nonpartisan voter engagement principles. Passion for social justice, community empowerment, and electoral participation. Ability to navigate complex political environments while maintaining a nonpartisan stance.
Preferred:
Deep understanding of ethnic media landscape and Asian-language digital platforms Experience in film and photo editing. Fluency in one or more Asian or Pacific Islander languages. Proficiency in content management systems, digital analytics, and media monitoring tools.
