General Summary of the Position
The Music Director is responsible for collaborating with clergy, staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, and musicians to plan and execute parish liturgies and music. The Director develops and directs liturgical ministers and musicians to provide leadership on Sundays and other special liturgies that will lead parishioners “to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14).The Director must possess the spirit of evangelization and work as a team player.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position
· Coordinate the music ministry for all parish liturgies, funerals, weddings, liturgy of the hours, reconciliation services, and any additional events in the church requiring music.This may be done in collaboration with clergy, liturgy coordinator/director, and members of the RCIA team as appropriate.
·Assume the role of lead parish musician (accompanist or choral/orchestra director).
·Trains, directs, and supervises choirs, instrumental ensembles, and cantors, and organists.
·Work with all musicians for parish liturgical services and other special occasions, planning music and arrangements, directing duties and functions concerning same.
·Recruits and schedules various ensembles within the music ministry including the Handbell Choir and Children’s Choir with the goal of expanding into two groups, younger and older.
·Helps coordinate and plan the music for special feasts, services, and functions in the parish/church, working in consultation with the pastor and other music staff/personnel as required.
·Supervise music staff in the creation and implementation of a cantor formation program.
·Expand the music ministry with new goals and ideas, i.e., concert series, involving the children’s choir in liturgies.
·Works cooperatively with music/choir directors/ministers of other parishes in planning, participating in and/or implementing special diocesan choral music programs, presentations, or functions as requested by the pastor or the worship coordinator.
·Plans creative choices of music and their judicious placement for liturgical celebrations.
·Purchases, catalogues, and manages all printed and electronic music materials, library holdings for assigned choir(s) and congregation as needed.
·Makes recommendations for the purchase and maintenance of instruments, sound equipment, and hymnals.Manage the ongoing creation of various worship aids.
·Directs the development of a master plan for the long-range direction of the parish music program and facilities, including the areas for liturgical participation, rehearsal, administration, and storage.
·Serves as a musical resource for parishioners and staff.
·Manage and grow the music ministry social media pages.
·Engage the services of contract musicians as judiciously necessary.
·Develop and manage the annual parish music budget.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
·Working knowledge of liturgical forms: e.g., Eucharistic Celebrations, Liturgy of the Hours, Reconciliation and be conversant with church documents regarding music for various types of celebrations.
·Have a comprehensive knowledge of choral, vocal, organ, instrumental music, and music for the assembly suitable for the liturgy. A familiarity with music from chant through contemporary music is essential.
·Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: organ, piano, voice, and conducting, as well as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, handbells, children’s choirs, composition, and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures of the community.
·Arrange music for various configurations of singers and instrumentalists.
·Develop funding sources as part of the annual budget.
·Ability to play both organ and piano preferred.
·Must understand GIRM and the rubrics of the Roman Missal
·Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs (Excel, Word, Publisher), internet and social media.
·Ability to train and teach others.
·Strong verbal and written skills to keep parishioners, volunteers and staff informed.
·Excellent organizational skills to handle multiple projects at one time.
Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in music organ with training in choral conducting.
·Minimum of 5 years’ experience in liturgical music
·Minimum of 2 years choral directing experience including the ability to direct from the bench.
·Active member, in good standing, of the Roman Catholic Church preferred.
·Must have the Diocese of Dallas Safe Environment Certification.
