Job Description Summary
The Childcare Center Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, balanced meals and snacks to children in a safe, sanitary, and timely manner. This role requires the ability to plan menus that meet the dietary needs of children, including those with food allergies or special dietary restrictions, while adhering to state regulations and guidelines. The Cook will also manage inventory, maintain a clean kitchen environment, and work collaboratively with childcare staff to ensure a positive mealtime experience.
Duties
Key Responsibilities:
• Menu Planning: Develop and implement weekly menus that are age-appropriate, nutritionally balanced, and meet the dietary needs of all children, including those with allergies or special dietary requirements. • Meal Preparation: Prepare meals and snacks according to the planned menu, ensuring that all food is cooked and stored at appropriate temperatures, and that portion sizes are appropriate for the age group. • Food Safety Sanitation: Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal health and safety regulations, including proper food handling, storage, and disposal procedures. • Inventory Management: Monitor and manage food inventory, including ordering supplies, rotating stock, and minimizing waste. Ensure that all food and supplies are within expiration dates and stored properly. • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of menus, food temperatures, and sanitation logs. Document any food allergies and dietary restrictions, and ensure that all staff are informed. • Collaboration: Work closely with childcare staff to coordinate meal and snack times, and to ensure that any special dietary needs or restrictions are communicated and met. • Compliance: Stay informed about and ensure compliance with state regulations and guidelines regarding food preparation and service in a childcare setting. • Communication: Communicate effectively with parents and staff about menu items, ingredients, and any changes to dietary offerings.
Requirements
Experience: Previous experience in a commercial kitchen or as a cook in a childcare, school, or similar setting is preferred. Knowledge: Strong understanding of child nutrition, food safety, and sanitation practices. Familiarity with state regulations for food service in childcare settings. Skills: Excellent cooking skills, with the ability to prepare healthy meals that appeal to children. Strong organizational and time management skills. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform other physical tasks associated with food preparation.
