THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Resources, the EH&S Manager (Part Time/Contractor) will oversee daily EH&S operations, foster a welcoming and productive environment for employees and visitors, and support general ergonomic needs across departments.
This role will work closely with and complement our existing HR organization, Facilities, as well as our Executive Assistants (one supporting CEO/G&A and one supporting Development), ensuring seamless support across the company.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)
- Serve as the point of contact for Environmental Health & Safety policies, procedures, and compliance
- Safety Training Management - Create, implement and facilitate EH&S annual training. Ensure annual monitoring of Safety Training requirements are maintained and up to Cal-OSHA standards
- Safety Meeting Administration - Initiate, schedule and conduct safety committee meetings, maintain meeting minutes, track action items, and distribute safety communications
- Regulatory Compliance Tracking - Maintain training matrices and certification records for OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements. Track renewal dates and coordinate refresher training
- Emergency Preparedness - Assist with emergency drill coordination, maintain emergency contact lists, and support business continuity planning activities
- Safety Audit Support - Coordinate internal and external safety audits, track corrective action completion, and maintain audit documentation
- EH&S Document Management - Maintain safety data sheets (SDS), permits, inspection records, and other EH&S documentation in organized filing systems
- Contractor Safety Coordination - Ensure contractors complete required safety orientation and maintain current safety certifications before site access
- Equipment Management- Ensure office equipment, first aid, and emergency supplies are available and in compliance with regulations
- Partner with external EH&S vendors and internal stakeholders to coordinate audits, training, and safety drills as needed
- Office Operations Ergonomics and Administration
- Serve as the primary point of contact for office-related ergonomics inquiries and vendor relationships
- Ergonomics Management- Coordinate with the Facilities manager, office access, seating arrangements, and space planning as it relates to ergonomics, for a growing team.
- Be the primary point of contact for ergonomic assessments, requests and recommendations for additional equipment ordering with external vendor. Follow up to ensure identified issues have been resolved.
- Assist with special projects across departments (e.g., team meetings, all-hands meetings, celebrations)
- Maintain office policies and procedures and recommend improvements
- Assist with onboarding logistics for new hires (e.g., setting up workstations, ordering equipment)
- Perform other duties as required to support a growing and dynamic biotech environment
- 3-5 years of experience in an EH&S role or office manage role with EH&S responsibilities, ideally within a biotech or other fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities, with sharp attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, can-do approach.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), video conferencing platforms, and productivity tools (e.g., Slack, Asana).
- Ability to work independently and adapt to a fast-changing environment.
- Strong sense of discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.
89bio considers a range of factors when determining salary and level. These considerations mean actual salary and level may vary. The expected hourly rate for this position based on the primary location for this position in Northern California is $75 - $80.
89bio's role/level assessment approach involves assessing candidates during the interview process before confirming the level/title designation.
