Position Details: Shift: Evening shift 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Location: Clinical Lab Building in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, near UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate role (Histotechnician or Histotechnologist) and salary level based on experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $24.32 per hour. UPMC is currently offering a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 for Histotechnicians and Histotechnologists! Responsibilities: Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow. Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area. Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies. Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/staining Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols. Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters. Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process. Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols. Histotechnician: High school diploma. Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam: Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR; Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry. 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred. Histotechnologist: Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP): B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR; B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years. Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist. 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Am Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.
