Cheekwood is a 55-acre estate in Nashville, Tennessee, built in 1929 and opened to the public in 1960. It features botanical gardens, an arboretum, an art museum, and various historic and artistic attractions. Cheekwood is nationally recognized and attracts over 380,000 visitors annually.
Position Description
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Gardens is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, responsible for leading the botanical gardens and historic estate to maintain and enhance Cheekwood's status as a premier garden and historic site.
Essential Responsibilities
Strategic Vision and Leadership :
Develops plans to uphold horticultural excellence and collaborates on initiatives supporting the institution's strategic goals.
Builds partnerships with local and national organizations to elevate Cheekwood's reputation.
Serves as liaison for the Board's Botanical Garden Committee.
Garden Management :
Oversees all operational aspects of the garden, including displays, collections, and sustainability practices.
Leads design and development of horticultural projects and seasonal displays.
Manages garden exhibitions, special events, and collaborations with artists and contractors.
Oversees the Holiday LIGHTS program and supports related projects.
Coordinates with Museum Affairs on garden-related exhibitions and programs.
Manages capital projects and historic landscape maintenance.
Develops and monitors the garden budget.
Collaborates on interpretative materials and signage.
Represents the garden in marketing, media, and civic engagements.
Works with Facilities on maintenance and improvements.
Engages with community groups supporting Cheekwood.
Provides strategic oversight for the arboretum and living collections.
Coordinates with the CEO on weather and disaster responses.
Team Management :
Leads the botanical garden team, fostering collaboration and safety.
Ensures team compliance with policies and safety protocols.
Coordinates planning and operations with key team members.
Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field, with at least five years of relevant experience. Proven leadership and organizational skills, excellent communication, and knowledge of botanic collections and sustainability practices are essential. Willingness to work non-traditional hours and proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management are required. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary.
