Job Summary
Memorial Hermann TMC Blood Bank is recruiting for a Lead Blood Bank Medical Technologist.
Must be ASCP or AMT Certified to be considered. SBB certification is a plus but not required.
Experience in a large academic health system is a plus.
Position is responsible for daily supervision of laboratory operations including staff scheduling, quality assurance, ensuring cost efficiencies, and patient (customer) satisfaction. Performs management functions as directed by the Department Manager or Lab Director. Represents the Laboratory in the absence of the Manager and provides patient care appropriate to the age of the patient/population served.
Position is intended for use only in a >400 bed hospital or Consolidated Laboratory.
Job Description Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Biological Science (or equivalent for foreign education)
Licenses/Certifications:
Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT), Certified CLS (ASCP or ASCP-International), or Certified MLS (ASCP or ASCP-International)
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
Five (5) years of experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory and demonstrated leadership skills.
Completed competency in assigned area within one (1) year of accepting this position.
Principal Accountabilities
Oversees, evaluates, performs, and documents test results, quality control, maintenance, and corrective actions according to policies. Maintains technical procedures and meets competency requirements for all workstations. Writes procedures and exhibits working knowledge of laboratory information systems.
Supports customer service initiatives, recognizes satisfaction issues, and responds appropriately. Builds effective relationships with staff and customers, solicits input, and implements corrective actions.
Understands the quality process, utilizes quality techniques, and serves as a resource for performance improvement. Participates in quality and technical teams.
Acts as a resource with advanced knowledge in certain technical processes and laboratory information systems. Oversees laboratory processes.
Develops and validates laboratory tests and assays under supervision. Verifies test results, addresses technical problems, and interacts with physicians and departments. May act as in-charge during shifts or in the absence of the Manager or Lab Director.
Promotes quality patient care and customer satisfaction, safety, cost efficiency, and CQI initiatives.
Participates in hiring, training, and mentoring staff. Verifies competency of new employees and trains on new procedures.
Ensures compliance with hospital, laboratory, and regulatory standards (TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, HCFA, OSHA, CLIA). Assists in implementing standards and maintaining accreditation.
Ensures safety policies are followed, manages resources efficiently, and maintains productivity and quality standards within budget.
Supports professional growth through continuing education and skills development. Serves as a preceptor and mentor.
Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards, providing compassionate, personalized, and safe experiences for patients and colleagues.
Performs other duties as assigned.
