Pay Range: $38 - $56.78 per hour

The pay range for each role reflects Rushs anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. Offers may vary depending on the circumstances of each case.

Summary

Performs diagnostic cardiopulmonary diagnostic testing using several different types of complex medical equipment. Performs quality control and performance checks on equipment. Administers various medications, gases, devices, and procedures. Provides patient and family education. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

RRT with an Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner License. The Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) credential is required within 12 months of hire. RPFT may be obtained in 12 months in lieu of the CPFT. Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) is required within 18 months of hire. BLS certified. Technical skills are required to apply equipment to testing and patient needs. Analytical skills to evaluate patients, their clinical response to testing and medication, assessment of patient effort, and independent application of diagnostic protocols. Customer service skills are required to effectively meet the needs of patients, families, and members of the healthcare team on an almost continuous basis. Standing, walking, pushing, and bending 50% of the day. Hand and finger dexterity to frequently adjust settings on equipment. Average vision and hearing, and above average communication skills are required due to significant patient-technologist interaction during testing. Capable of exhibiting significant patience as multiple patient coachings may be required to obtain reliable test results. Adaptable to respond to changing workloads and priorities.

Physical Demands

Able to occasionally push rolling equipment up to 200 lbs., lift equipment up to 20 lbs., and lift, position, and roll patients weighing up to 400 lbs. with assistance.

Responsibilities

Performs pulmonary function testing, applies knowledge and testing protocols to determine extent of needed testing, performs bedside screening spirometry. Performs arterial puncture and blood gas analysis. Obtains pertinent patient history. Performs exercise/stress testing. Performs desaturation and airline simulation studies. Obtains sweat samples and analyzes chloride levels. Decontaminates equipment. Prepares bronchoscopy suite for procedures, assists the physician and nurse during the procedure, prepares the room for the next patient. Provides patient/family education on disease process and management and how to use medication administration devices correctly. Functions as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Documents work timely, completely, and accurately, including documentation in the patient medical record, documentation in department records, and patient billing. Precepts new employees and respiratory care students. Participates in CQI and QA initiatives including work audits and committee participation; develops protocols in conjunction with department leadership.
