Callidus is the most advanced legal generative AI platform today. Our platform enables lawyers to draft a full 30‑page legal brief in approximately 10 minutes, saving about a week of effort. We are an engineering‑led organization that empowers talent to build collaboratively toward our mission.

Your Role
We seek an architect-level engineer to lead our most ambitious generative AI projects as both architect and engineer. You’ll be an individual contributor, expected to:
- Set up optimized RAG/hybrid RAG systems.
- Build sophisticated agents.
- Fine-tune custom models.
- Customize open-source models via extended pretraining for deeper capabilities.
- Optimize our key API calls for maximal results on evals.
- Decide quickly on the best models for our API calls or set up systems.
- Make intelligent tradeoffs on speed, scale, and quality.
Seniority Level
Hiring Principal/Staff level engineers/architects, typically with 8-15 years post-college experience and 2-5 years in the generative AI space. Reporting to the Head of Engineering.
Tech Stack
- Cloud: Azure
- Backend: Python (FastAPI), Redis, Postgres
- Frontend: React/Next.js, Node
- AI: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Meta, Mistral (selecting best‑in‑class per task)
Requirements
What We’re Looking For
Core Requirements
- Proficiency in Python and ideally React/Next.js.
- Proven ability to ship high‑quality products quickly.
- Deep experience with LLM APIs and prompt engineering.
- Ability to implement advanced LLM techniques (hybrid RAG, hallucination guardrails, agentic workflows, agents, etc.).
- Experience in startups or LLM-focused companies.
- Willingness to commute to San Francisco office 3-5 days per week.

- Ownership mindset—delivering on commitments and surfacing risks early.
- Ability to work with ambiguity and minimal process.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
Passion & Dedication
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI and building category-defining products.

- Understanding that this role requires high effort, driven by passion for the mission.
Nice‑to‑Haves
- Legal or LegalTech experience.
- Strong DevOps skills on Azure or other cloud platforms.
- Personal use of AI tools (Cursor, CoPilot, Midjourney, etc.).
- Automation and side projects related to productivity hacks.
- Engineering degree.

- Connecting with our Head of Engineering.
- Interview with another engineer.
- Final session with CEO.
