Description:
POSITION PURPOSE
Provides diagnostic services-Adult echocardiography, stress testing, ECGs and Holter monitoring. Is responsible for the safe and effective function of complex medical technology used for diagnosis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrates ability to read and understand medical technical materials and instructions: ability to communicate with medical/technical personnel and patients. Knowledge of principles and procedures of diagnostic sonography and operation and maintenance of routine sonography/stress testing and accessory equipment. Prioritizes ordered testing i.e. ECG, Holter monitoring, Echocardiography, stress testing and request for new services, based upon clinical assessment, ensuring a timely delivery of testing appropriate to the acuity of a patient's condition. Prepares and tests equipment for proper operation, and function and ensures testing is appropriate to physician prescription and patient's condition. Records and documents all pertinent information per policy.
a. Obtains patient history and clinical data for correction with sonogram
b. Identifies images with correct patient information
c. Provides clinical history, completed requisitions/worksheets etc. to cardiologist for interpretation/dictation.
d. Maintains patient log
Collaborates with nursing staff to perform clinical duties. Provides high quality patient care considering age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent practice and application. Demonstrates competencies. Performs duties which require attention to the physical and psychological well- being of patients: Safely transports/positions patient as necessary Explains ultrasound procedures to patients. Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as indicated and according to established policy and procedure. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Health System.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Education:
ARDMS registry required. ACLS certification required for all positions performing stress testing- new hires allowed 3 months to comply. Completion of a formal 2 year or associate degree program in diagnostic medical sonography (approved by Joint Review Committee on Education- and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registry) or previous certification in another health related field preferred Successful completion of a certificate program in medical sonography preferred. Responsible for educational needs in accordance with license.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, physicians and other health personnel. Analytical skills necessary to assist in resolving technical problems interpret results and alter procedures as necessary to provide optimal care. Ability to walk and stand for up to 100% of work time and to lift, pull, push and carry equipment weighing up to 20 pounds for up to 25% of work time. Visual form perception to perceive detail in ultrasound images for the determination of exposure acceptability, anatomical presentation, and image quality, auditor, sensory, verbal and mental activity.
