Terry Virts, an astronaut, was raised outside Baltimore in Columbia, Maryland. Being an only child, he knew from reading his first book on the Apollo missions in kindergarten that he wanted to be an astronaut. He graduated with a master's in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1997 and a bachelor of science in mathematics with a minor in French from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989. Virts participated in an exchange program at the École de l'Air in 1988. He received his pilot's license and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After training, he served at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany and Osan Air Base in South Korea. At Edwards Air Force Base, he was selected for test pilot school in 1997, flying over 4,500 hours in more than 40 aircraft. Virts flew aboard Soyuz TMA-15M in November 2014 and led Expedition 43 on the International Space Station in March 2015, spending over 200 days in space. He starred in the IMAX film "A Beautiful Planet," shot from the ISS, which showcases breathtaking imagery of Earth.
