The goal of a Senior Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer at Wisk is to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable thermal management of high-performance battery systems for our electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. You will be part of the Energy Storage and Power Systems (ESPS) product team that develops and optimizes battery thermal solutions to support high-power density, fast-charging, and extended operational life requirements. This is a

hybrid

work opportunity. At Wisk, this means working onsite at our

Mountain View, CA

office

three days per week , with flexibility for remote work on the remaining days. In this role, you will… Design, develop, and optimize battery thermal management systems for high-performance eVTOL battery packs.

Conduct thermal modeling, simulations, and validation testing to ensure battery safety, efficiency, and longevity.

Collaborate with battery design, powertrain, aerodynamics, and system integration teams to optimize thermal performance.

Develop innovative cooling and heating strategies for high-power battery applications, ensuring compliance with aerospace safety standards.

Lead failure mode analysis (e.g., thermal runaway mitigation) and define safety-critical thermal management strategies.

Support battery certification efforts by working with regulatory agencies and ensuring compliance with aviation standards.

What you will do: As part of the

ESPS

organization, and deployed in the

Battery Thermal Engineering

sub-team, you will act as a

Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer

for a novel type of aircraft targeting the autonomous Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market. You will take part in

designing, testing, and validating advanced battery thermal management solutions

to improve safety, performance, and efficiency.

You will support

cross-functional teams , including battery design, mechanical, electrical, and system integration teams, to optimize thermal performance.

You will help support

problem-solving activities

related to thermal challenges in battery packs, including cooling efficiency, heat dissipation, and thermal runaway mitigation.

You will take part in

coordinating thermal validation and verification testing

to meet aerospace industry safety standards.

In some areas, you will be working closely with

certification, safety, and compliance teams

to ensure battery thermal management solutions align with regulatory requirements.

You will plan and execute

thermal analysis, CFD simulations, and lab-scale prototype testing

to validate thermal performance.

As a

Staff Battery Thermal Design Engineer , you will help define

thermal management strategies, material selection, and cooling system architectures

for next-generation battery systems.

Requirements: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in

Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Thermal Sciences, or a related field

with at least 12 + years

of experience in battery thermal management, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or energy industries.

You have worked in

battery systems, electric powertrains, or aerospace electrification industries .

You have hands-on experience

developing, integrating, and testing battery thermal management solutions, including liquid cooling, phase-change materials, or active cooling techniques .

You have a deep and applied knowledge of

thermal modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and battery pack safety analysis .

You have led projects that achieved

successful battery system thermal performance improvements, safety enhancements, or efficiency optimizations .

You are familiar with

aviation battery safety standards (DO-311A, ARP4761, AS6413) and battery thermal testing methodologies .

Experience with

thermal runaway prevention strategies, fire suppression methods, and regulatory compliance

is a plus.

This role may require

up to 20% travel

for testing, supplier visits, or regulatory engagements.

Job Type: Full-time Pay Range the Company expects to pay: $215,050 - $253,000 per year - The starting base salary within this range for this role varies based on factors such as your geographical location, and your relevant job-related experience that is consistent with a business necessity.
