The Building Safety Manager (BSM) manages building-wide compliance with applicable regulatory standards associated with laboratory operations, with a focus on research and teaching labs, makerspaces, shops, and other unique lab spaces (greenhouse, clinical, cleanroom, etc.). The position is on-site at Northeastern’s Boston campus and reports to the Senior Manager of the Building Safety Program in the Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS).

As an embedded safety staff, you will facilitate, assess, and promote an enhanced culture of safety and a healthy work environment through close collaboration with the broader OARS team and key personnel in assigned buildings, including Principal Investigators, lab personnel, Safety Officers, and facilities staff.

Your core activities will include maintaining MAQ compliance, managing hazardous materials, leading inspections and corrective actions, conducting risk assessments, contributing to lab design and renovations, safety planning for research continuity, and supporting lab registrations with the City of Boston. You will also serve as the emergency coordinator for laboratory emergencies and participate in the OARS emergency response team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, process safety, materials science, environmental science, or an applicable field, with at least five years of experience managing EHS requirements.
  • Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree and a background in chemistry or chemical engineering. Experience within higher education, hazardous materials management, process safety, or high hazard environments is desirable. Laboratory research or EHS compliance experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations relevant to laboratory operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, SharePoint, and Smartsheets.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Experience with inspections, risk assessments, and safety controls for experiments and equipment.
  • Experience with laboratory emergencies, including gas releases and spill remediation, and recognizing unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and other PPE, lift up to 50 lbs, and move materials using carts. Comfortable working in various physical environments including mechanical spaces, confined spaces, and elevated locations.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Hazardous Materials Management (40%)

Lead chemical safety and compliance, monitor inventories, and assist labs with hazardous materials handling and disposal.

Laboratory Emergency Planning and Response (35%)

Implement EAPs, conduct training and drills, maintain emergency equipment, and investigate incidents to reduce risks.

Other Duties and Responsibilities (25%)

Work with principal investigators on risk assessments, safety inspections, promote safe practices, assist with lab startup and decommissioning, and provide safety training and resources.

Northeastern offers a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range is $75,210 - $106,230, dependent on experience and qualifications.
