Vertical Horizons, a transformative MIT spin-out, is leading the development of vertical gallium nitride (GaN) power electronics which will revolutionize power electronics in industries such as data centers, energy systems, renewable energy, and electric vehicles (EVs).
Role Description
As a rapidly growing startup, we are seeking a full-time Senior Power Electronics Applications Engineer to help drive the commercialization of vertical GaN technology and support our engineering team through its critical stages of growth. This role will focus on designing demonstration and characterization circuits for vertical GaN devices for various target applications. You will have the opportunity to be hands-on in shaping the development of transformative power electronics, with your contributions directly impacting the company's success and industry disruption. Candidates who can work from our office at Greentown Labs (Somerville, MA) are preferred, but remote candidates will also be considered.
Qualifications
- Deep knowledge and practical experience in DC-DC power converter topologies, soft switching techniques, control loop designs, magnetics, and semiconductor device physics fundamentals.
- Familiarity with high-frequency circuits for power electronics and simulation software.
- Experience with digital oscilloscopes, function generators, and network analyzers for testing and debugging semiconductor devices and switching power supplies.
- Proficiency in schematic entry, circuit simulation, and PCB layout tools.
- Desire to work in a highly-collaborative, fast-paced startup environment.
- Power circuit design experience with GaN or SiC is preferred.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Python/MATLAB or similar for data analysis.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration across teams and external partners.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a master's degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power circuit design or 5+ years of relevant industry experience. Familiarity with medium voltage V) wide bandgap power devices such as GaN HEMTs or SiC MOSFETs for 1-20 kW converter designs is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable working closely with semiconductor device engineers and take ownership of their role.
