Director of Institutional Finance

General Description
The Director of Institutional Finance is responsible for reviewing, interpreting, and managing financial data submitted to the organization by member and candidate institutions. This position supports the President by managing special projects and overseeing critical financial components of the accreditation process. The Director ensures consistent and accurate application of financial standards and serves as a subject matter expert on institutional finance within the context of accreditation.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
- Review financial materials and support staff memoranda; serve as a financial consultant during meetings of the Committees on Compliance and Reports.
- Assist traveling staff in reviewing institutional audits and management letters submitted as part of applications or institutional reporting.
- Collaborate with the Director of Legal and Governmental Affairs and Commission Support to ensure accuracy and alignment of policies, procedures, and handbooks related to institutional finance.
- Revise and maintain Institutional Profiles related to enrollment and finances; oversee the collection and verification of management data from institutions.
- Follow up on profile-related questions, verify institutional responses for accuracy, and collaborate with the Information Systems Office to support data digitization and analysis.
- Identify and report excessive enrollment changes to Commission Support.
- Select and formally train financial evaluators (“finance readers”) for the Committees on Compliance and Reports, in coordination with traveling staff.
- Assist staff with institutional research projects involving financial data.
- Respond to institutional inquiries related to financial aspects of accreditation, working collaboratively with assigned staff.
- Recruit and train financial evaluators to support the evaluator registry; work closely with staff responsible for training and registry functions.
- Serve as liaison to state auditors and external reporting entities regarding financial accreditation requirements.
- Support appeals and arbitration processes by applying financial standards and contributing to the development of legal briefs.
- Maintain active membership in professional organizations such as NACUBO and SACUBO and remain current on issues affecting institutional finance and accreditation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the President.
- In-depth understanding of non-profit financial management, with particular emphasis on the higher education sector.
- Strong familiarity with public and private college/university finance structures and operations.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
- Effective project planning and coordination abilities; capable of working independently.
- Creative and strategic thinking in the use and interpretation of institutional data.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor is required.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive experience working with financial data and ensuring data integrity.
- Minimum of three years of successful experience as a finance officer at a non-profit college or university is required.
- Demonstrated experience in non-profit and higher education financial management is essential.
- CPA designation and/or direct experience with accreditation processes is preferred.
