Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Assistant Director. The Office of the Chancellor for Finance and Budget Strategic Planning is seeking a proactive and results oriented Assistant Director for Budget, Accounting Management and Strategic Projects, reporting to the Director. The NWK Office for Financial Planning and Analysis manages the budgetary resources of RU-Newark in support of budgeting, accounting, research, and service. Working in a fast-paced environment, this position translates business needs and priorities into action through diligent project management, collaborative communications, independent analysis and strategic recommendations.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
- Develops financial modeling of Rutgers University-Newark resources for strategic planning and provides innovative recommendations to highly complex issues based on robust analysis with impact to all administration and academic units. With limited direction, independently prepares and gathers meaningful financial and budgetary data for ad hoc modeling, quarterly reporting, and special projects.
- Manages the standardization and coordination of all decision support data for NWK cost centers with focus on accounting, analytics, financial reporting, and benchmarking.
- Builds reporting capabilities.
- Develops and shares best practices as related to new systems and processes.
- Develops strong relationships with university partners and subject matter experts by providing leadership for facilitation of collaborative problem-solving and by employing effective communication strategies to convey long-term implications of budgetary decisions.
- Provides guidance to business administrators and school financial leads through the review and consolidation of month-end close, quarterly projection, and year-end financials.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices ( GAAP ).
- Also requires a minimum of five years of experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or other relevant area.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have collaborative work style, excellent communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced analytics and modeling experience. Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, and Outlook).
- Must possess excellent financial analytical skills, solid understanding of database structure and management information systems and have the ability to manipulate complex data from multiple sources (i.e., advanced Excel formulas and macros).
- Strong work ethic and ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously; detail-oriented and highly organized.
- Knowledge and experience with journal entries, financial statement preparation, and general accounting concepts are also required.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise confidentiality and discretion in the operational decision-making process.
- The incumbent will be expected to travel between and work out of multiple locations within the Newark Campus on a regular basis
- Experience working in a higher education environment strongly preferred.
- Strong preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of Responsibility Center Management, Tableau, Oracle ERP Cloud, and Oracle Hyperion Planning software.
- Specialized equipment for the incumbent will be in the shape of the software identified above.
- Prolonged computer utilization and long periods in sedentary positioning
