Join to apply for the Sr Electrical Hardware Engineer role at Maxar Space Systems
Please review the job details below.
At Maxar Space, our next generation spacecraft range from Earth observation to interplanetary missions, including NASA's Artemis Program Lunar Gateway Power and Propulsion Element (PPE). We are looking for an experienced Senior Avionics Hardware Electrical Engineer to join our growing Electrical Engineering team. This position provides an opportunity to participate in fast-paced iterative Avionics Hardware developments for Command & Data Handling systems, with an emphasis in proliferated LEO constellations applications.
In this role, located in our offices in San Jose CA, you will act as the engineering focal for one or several avionics units for different Maxar Space products. Collaborating closely with a cohort of electrical, mechanical, test and system engineers, you will develop electrical schematics, PCB board layouts, specifications and execute test activities in the laboratory. You will provide technical leadership and provide guidance to other engineers to complete the overall design of the avionics boxes. You may work with hardware in the laboratory to verify it is configured and communicates properly with other avionics, then help troubleshoot problems on the real spacecraft. This is an exciting opportunity to be the owner from concept to verification, production and operation of avionics hardware for space applications.
Responsibilities:
- Work with a cross-functional team (mechanical, thermal, software/firmware, test engineering, supply chain, etc.) to deliver high-performance hardware
- Understand, contribute to, and perform system trades, requirements capture, component selection, and various electrical design analyses
- Create electrical schematics, PCB layouts, mechanical drawings, test and verification plans
- Inform and/or direct design of test setups and, as needed, execute hardware validation through benchtop and environmental testing
- Oversee the manufacturing of PCB boards and avionics boxes both for research and volume production purposes. Effectively, support hardware through design, production, satellite integration, and on-orbit performance.
- Support execution of test campaigns in R&D and environmental laboratories, and use the data gathered to iterate the design. Be the cognizant responsible engineer, reviewing various test results and providing direction on design and performance impacts, and changes needed
- Perform root cause investigations to characterize off-nominal unit behavior and mitigate risk
- Drive changes to electrical schematics and mechanical drawings that improve reliability and manufacturability
- Derive engineering justification to resolve production issues throughout assembly, test, and integration
- Provide technical leadership and guidance
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field. 4 additional years of experience may be substituted for a degree.
- 8 years of experience with electrical design and analysis, with an emphasis in micro-processors and micro-controller board design.
- Hands-on oriented, willingness to test quick, understand failures and incorporate lessons learned in the design
- Experience with electrical test equipment (e.g., multimeters, signal generators, oscilloscopes)
- 10-12 years of relevant experience, including experience leading electrical engineering designs through the full lifecycle. Exposure to both Radiation Hardened (Rad Hard) designs and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) designs will be great, which should position you to support growing our product lines to support different space environment missions
- Familiarity with the space environment and its effect on satellite systems
- Experience with Analog, Digital, and Mixed-signal circuits
- Knowledge of electronics design and electrical communication standards, such as RS-422/485, MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire/Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I2C
- Experience with Electrical schematic capture and PCB design (eCAD) software (Altium is what we use)
- Experience with Mechanical design (mCAD) software
- Knowledge of common circuit blocks including filters, power supplies, and microcontrollers
- Exposure to FPGA hardware implementation for flight applications in the aerospace industry
- Knowledge of Design for excellence (DFX), root cause, derating, and related analyses
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
- Self-motivated problem solver, with strong communication, and documentation skills
- The base pay for this position within California is: $137,000.00 - $229,000.00 annually.
We offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, health and welfare insurance, and 401(k) to eligible employees.
