Director of Environmental Planning

An established consulting firm is seeking a strategic, team-oriented Director of Environmental Planning to lead and expand its CEQA/NEPA practice in San Diego. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of a growing service area while overseeing environmental planning efforts for high-profile projects across Southern California.
In this leadership role, you’ll drive business development, manage multidisciplinary project teams, and guide the successful delivery of environmental compliance documents. You’ll also have the chance to shape and mentor a small team, influence regional growth strategy, and engage directly with public and private clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead preparation and management of CEQA/NEPA documents and related technical studies
Coordinate with internal staff, subconsultants, clients, and reviewing agencies
Manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and invoicing
Support marketing, proposals, and strategic pursuits
Build and maintain client relationships throughout Southern California
Supervise and mentor 2–5 team members
What We’re Looking For:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, planning, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
15+ years of environmental planning experience (or strong credentials with less experience)
Proven business development and proposal leadership skills
Excellent writing, communication, and presentation abilities
Familiarity with regional agencies, CEQA/NEPA processes, and diverse project types
Strong QA/QC and project delivery mindset
Preferred:
Existing agency relationships in San Diego and Southern California
Experience managing planning or infrastructure-related environmental documents
