Role Summary

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will develop legal strategies and manage legal matters focusing on employment law and employee relations. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the legal activities of Alliance and its schools.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Provide legal advice on employment issues, including employee relations, discrimination, harassment, and wage laws;
  2. Guide on California education code, charter law, governance, real estate, labor, special education, and discipline;
  3. Render legal opinions and recommendations based on laws and policies;
  4. Draft or oversee contracts, leases, and legal documents;
  5. Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, policies, and review contracts;
  6. Manage litigation, mediations, and arbitrations;
  7. Coordinate with outside counsel and review their work;
  8. Advise school leaders and executive staff on legal matters;
  9. Participate in Board meetings providing legal counsel;
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidates Will Have

  • Commitment to Alliance’s educational philosophy;
  • Strong belief in scholars’ potential;
  • Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, especially California Education Code;
  • Proven experience in legal planning, organization, and providing legal services in nonprofits or public agencies;
  • Project management skills with strategic translation abilities;
  • Ability to build relationships with stakeholders and work effectively in teams;
  • Independent and collaborative work capabilities;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit for a fast-paced environment;
  • Willingness to contribute beyond core duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school;
  • Admitted to the California State Bar;
  • At least six (6) years of legal experience in employment, litigation, labor, or education law.

Work Location

This hybrid role involves remote work, office presence, and travel to school sites. A $400 work-from-home setup allowance and a $100 monthly stipend are provided.

Salary Range: $130,000 - $173,500
