UNIT CHIEF COUNSEL (ATTORNEY GENERAL - DEPT OF LAW)

Location: Tucson or Phoenix

Salary Range: $90,000 - $121,000

Grade: 22

Job Summary

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office Solicitor General Office/Capital Litigation Section seeks a Unit Chief Counsel to assist the Chief Counsel in reviewing all substantive briefs and pleadings, primarily federal habeas responses, filed by assistant attorneys in the section. This position may be eligible for remote work three days a week.

Job Duties

The employee will attend moot courts and oral arguments, review and approve timesheets, manage leave requests, assist with hiring, training, mentoring, and performance evaluations. Additionally, the employee will support attorneys in representing the State of Arizona at federal habeas corpus evidentiary hearings and Rule 32 hearings in state courts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of management, personnel rules, legal research methods, and legal principles.
  • Understanding of Arizona statutory law, constitutional law, trial procedures, rules of evidence, and judicial systems.
  • Litigation skills, oral advocacy, research, and writing abilities.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues, negotiate, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to apply legal principles and present facts clearly in writing and orally.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Travel is required; a valid Arizona Driver’s License is necessary.
  • Active Arizona State Bar license and good standing required.
  • Applicants must submit a legal writing sample analyzing a substantive legal issue.
  • Candidates will undergo fingerprinting and criminal background checks.

Retirement
