We're seeking a Senior Packaging Process and Quality Engineer to join our Supply Chain team in San Francisco, California. In this pivotal role, you'll be instrumental in ensuring the quality, manufacturability, sustainability, and efficiency of Oura's product packaging throughout its lifecycle. You'll collaborate closely with our industrial design, product, manufacturing, and supply chain teams, from concept development through mass production and reverse logistics.
You'll be responsible for developing and implementing robust quality processes for all packaging components and assemblies. This includes establishing critical specifications, conducting supplier audits, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance packaging quality, reduce defects, and optimize manufacturing processes. Your expertise will be key in mitigating risks, resolving quality issues, and ensuring our packaging meets both Oura's high standards and our customers' expectations. You'll serve as the primary quality liaison between Oura and our packaging suppliers, championing best practices and a culture of quality.
This is a Hybrid role (3 days per week) based in our San Francisco, California office.
What you will do:
- Own packaging quality assurance: Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive quality plans and inspection procedures for all Oura product packaging.
- Manage daily packaging operations: Oversee the daily packaging workflow and operations to consistently meet production targets and ensure compliance with packaging specifications, quality standards, safety regulations, and relevant packaging laws.
- Drive process optimization for packaging and packout: Identify and implement improvements to packaging manufacturing processes, kitting, packout, tooling, and fixtures to enhance quality, yield, and efficiency. Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to packaging processes to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
- Supplier quality and material management: Coordinate with suppliers to procure packaging materials that meet Oura's quality standards and cost objectives. Conduct regular supplier audits to assess capabilities, ensure adherence to quality standards, and drive continuous improvement initiatives for packaging vendors. Monitor inventory levels of packaging materials and coordinate replenishment as needed to prevent disruptions.
- Defect analysis and resolution: Lead root cause analysis for packaging defects and field failures, implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with suppliers. Troubleshoot packaging issues and implement immediate corrective actions to minimize downtime.
- Integrate sustainability into packaging solutions: Research, evaluate, and implement sustainable packaging materials and processes to minimize environmental impact, reduce waste, and support Oura's broader sustainability goals. Monitor the environmental impact of packaging solutions and recommend eco-friendly alternatives.
- Optimize SKU complexity: Work with cross-functional teams to analyze and optimize packaging SKUs for efficiency, cost reduction, and streamlined inventory management across the supply chain.
- Support Reverse Logistics: Collaborate on processes related to packaging for product returns, refurbishment, and re-commerce, ensuring packaging solutions facilitate efficient reverse logistics operations.
- Risk mitigation & compliance: Proactively identify potential packaging quality and manufacturing risks, developing strategies to mitigate them throughout the product development and mass production phases. Stay informed of changing regulatory requirements and industry compliance standards for packaging.
- New Product Introduction (NPI) support: Provide critical quality and manufacturability feedback during early packaging design phases, ensuring seamless transitions from prototype to mass production.
- Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management: Collaborate closely with other departments (production, logistics, quality) to ensure smooth packaging operations. Liaise with go-to-market partners to understand their specific packaging requirements and expectations, incorporating partner needs into packaging specifications and processes while maintaining efficiency. Communicate lead times clearly to all stakeholders and ensure timely delivery against commitments.
- Documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate records of packaging operations, material usage, and quality checks. Create and maintain detailed quality documentation, control plans, inspection reports, and present data-driven insights to cross-functional teams.
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
