Job Title: Optical Engineer

Location: Redmond, WA – Onsite

We are seeking an Optical Engineer to support the development of next-generation mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR) display systems. This role requires expertise in optical system design, experimentation, and data analysis. The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex optical challenges, improving system precision through rigorous analysis, and iterating with detail-oriented, data-driven approaches.

Responsibilities

• Develop optical components, sub-assemblies, and systems for novel display technologies.
• Build and operate automated optical fabrication and metrology systems in a lab environment.
• Implement and conduct optics simulations using commercial software or scientific programming tools.
• Handle, catalog, and maintain optical components, laboratory equipment, and the laboratory environment.

Must-Have Skills

• Strong lab skills: optical experiments, lasers, metrology.
• Proficiency with MATLAB or Python.
• Solid understanding of diffractive optics.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, CodeV, LightTools).
• Knowledge of holographic optical element fabrication.

Minimum Qualifications

• BS degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical/Mechanical/Computer Engineering, or related field with 3+ years of experience; OR Master’s degree with 2+ years of experience; OR equivalent hands-on experience.
• Hands-on experience implementing complex optical experiments from concept to benchtop validation.
• Familiarity with diffractive optics, ray optics, optical metrology, and characterization.
• Prior optical lab training, including laser safety and handling/cleaning optics.
• 3+ years of experience with MATLAB or Python for scientific programming and data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with holographic optical element fabrication or laser interferometer systems.
• Experience with optomechanical instruments (mechanical stages, motion controllers) and metrology tools (spectrometer, polarimeter, sensors, spatial light modulators, etc.).
• Experience with automation programming in lab settings (instrument interface, motion control, image acquisition, data collection/analysis).
• Ability to write custom optical simulation software or use commercial tools (Zemax, CodeV, LightTools) for system modeling and optimization.
• Experience with clean room experiments or optical coating/lamination.
• Experience with specialty optics (Bragg volume gratings, diffractive optics, polarization optics, etc.).
• Hands-on experience with photopolymer handling and processing.
• Proven track record of solving challenging optical problems, demonstrated by publications, patents, or significant project results.
