Truck Driver
Under general supervision, to operate heavy trucks and related equipment; to assist in loading and unloading trucks; to perform related construction and maintenance work; and to do related work as required. This class differs from Equipment Operators in the type of equipment used. Truck Drivers operate various types of heavy trucks for a major portion of the time. Equipment used by truck drivers includes dump trucks, refuse collection trucks and equipment of comparable difficulty. Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and one (1) year of experience in the operation of various types of trucks. Required Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Iowa Class A CDL with tank endorsement and allowing the operation of tractor trailers and vehicles with airbrakes. Candidates for positions in this class must pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination and drug screen. Please note: If you possess an out-of-state Driver's License, you are required to submit certified driving records. These records must be submitted to the City of Des Moines Human Resources Department by the application deadline. Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only): Operates truck to haul and dump materials, supplies and refuse; may operate tank trucks to haul water or sprinkle streets; spreads gravel, salt, sand, oil and other materials used on roads; collects and transports supplies and personnel according to instructions; drives truck with snow plow attachments; may operate other equipment of a comparable nature as necessary; patches roads, cleans culverts, trims brush and performs other routine manual tasks; performs minor servicing and maintenance on assigned equipment; maintains accurate records of mileage and maintenance; reports any mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel; performs related work as required.
