Align Technology’s 3D Printing Process team is seeking a
Sr. 3D Process Engineer
to join our San Jose, CA location. This in-person role involves hands-on, in-lab research and development focused on advancing additive manufacturing process control. The successful candidate will lead targeted R&D initiatives to solve fundamental process problems, serve as a subject matter expert in additive manufacturing, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support regulatory submissions, process validation, and technology transfer activities. Role expectations
Independently operate new additive manufacturing equipment and post-processing equipment. Perform material and product testing using standard and non-standard material testing equipment. Collect, maintain, and organize data in accordance with internal standards and quality requirements. Participate in, and lead, weekly and bi-weekly technical meetings with cross-functional groups. Present data, findings, and ideas to process and cross-functional teams regularly. Use statistical tools to analyze, interpret, and present experimental results. Write, maintain, and transfer work instructions to manufacturing teams. Develop and support protocols for process and equipment qualification and transfer. Create work instructions for core R&D activities. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support major project milestones. Serve as SME for design for additive manufacturing (DFAM). Operate, collect, and analyze data from polymer characterization equipment for fundamental research. Apply expertise in process-structure-property relationships to optimize processes. Develop methods to collect and analyze data from advanced metrology techniques. Manage collection and analysis of orthodontic performance data. Design and execute experiments to study process-structure-property relationships. Lead and delegate tasks to junior team members and technicians. Create and evaluate prototypes of equipment, jigs, fixtures, and tools. Maintain vendor relationships and oversee design review and release of custom equipment. Develop metrics for process capability and in-process monitoring. Lead test method development and validation activities. Support regulatory documentation through experimental results and analysis. Serve as SME during audits related to process development. Specify requirements for manufacturing software tools. Act as a technical liaison for software development and testing. Support calibration, safety, and spirit committee programs. Foster collaboration and support onboarding of new engineers. Work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines, with attention to detail. Mentor and lead peers and junior engineers. What we're looking for
MS in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 6-8 years of 3D printing experience, especially with SLA/resin-based systems or medical devices. PhD in Mechanical or relevant field with 3-5 years of focus on process development for photopolymer AM systems; experience with medical applications is a plus. Expertise in statistical analysis and experimental design. Proven ability to independently lead research and troubleshoot. Experience working with chemicals like isopropyl alcohol, photopolymers, and cleaning agents. Comfort with risk-based decision-making in ambiguous situations. Excellent technical communication skills. Strong mathematical skills for process modeling. Experience with CT, surface profilometry, digital microscopy, and similar imaging tools. Proven collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams. Nice to Have:
Practical coding skills in Python or similar. Experience with end-to-end development of printing or post-processing parameters. Experience collaborating with polymer design/engineering teams. Development of process control and capability metrics. Familiarity with AM tools like SolidWorks, slicers, and toolpath software. Experience building or operating custom 3D printers or post-processing equipment. Experience with 3D printed medical or biomechanical devices. Pay Transparency: Salary ranges are estimates based on skills, experience, and location. Actual compensation will depend on individual qualifications and team considerations. For non-primary locations, salary may be adjusted geographically. Hourly rates are determined based on various factors including experience and location.
