Opportunity Overview
Northramp is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to design, deliver, and maintain advanced network solutions for both secure and non-secure environments.
This role is primarily onsite in Washington DC, with potential for occasional travel to New York City. Option to work remotely only available when client workload and schedule allows.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in enterprise networking, cloud integrations, and secure architectures. They’ll collaborate with stakeholders across technical and security teams to design, implement, and optimize networks that meet rigorous federal standards while enabling seamless user experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Network Design & Implementation
Provide services related to architecting, delivering, and maintaining solutions for modern, high-performance data communications systems. This includes:
Network management equipment, Internet Protocol (IP) routing/switching hardware, access points, encryption appliances, signal conversion equipment, and security gateways
Integration of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), SD-WAN solutions, and Zero Trust / SASE architectures. Implement and support secure remote access and Zero Trust frameworks using Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) and Zscaler Private Access (ZPA).
Cloud networking design and integration for AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform environments.
All systems residing on the customer premise beyond the carrier demarcation point.
Planning & Deployment
Design and engineer secure and scalable wired and wireless infrastructure.
Implement Quality of Service (QoS) policies to prioritize traffic, optimize application performance, and improve user experience.
Support IPv4 networks while leading planning, migration, and optimization for IPv6 adoption.
Utilize network automation tools (e.g., Python, Ansible, Terraform) for configuration management and deployment consistency.
All systems residing on the customer premise beyond the carrier demarcation point.
Operations & Maintenance
Develop comprehensive documentation, runbooks, and network diagrams to support engineering, transition, and operational teams.
Apply advanced network engineering principles for integrating complex systems (e.g., routing/switching platforms, Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls, VPN concentrators, load balancers, unified communications systems).
Manage and optimize Aruba Central deployments for large-scale wireless environments, including firmware lifecycle, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Oversee and troubleshoot large-scale enterprise networks (Campus Area Networks, Metropolitan Area Networks, and Wide Area Networks).
Schedule and manage network conversions, cutovers, and upgrades with minimal downtime.
Conduct performance monitoring, capacity planning, and proactive optimization using modern observability tools (e.g., NetFlow, SNMP, sFlow, ELK stack, Grafana).
Security & Compliance
Implement and maintain next-generation firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and secure remote access solutions.
Enforce role-based and device-based access control using Aruba ClearPass NAC policies.
Configure and monitor Palo Alto firewall security policies, threat prevention, URL filtering, and integration with cloud-based security platforms like Zscaler.
Ensure compliance with NIST 800-53, CMMC, FedRAMP, or similar federal cybersecurity frameworks.
Collaborate with security teams to apply network segmentation, access control policies, and encryption best practices.
Required Qualifications
US Citizenship and ability to successfully pass a federal background investigation.
7+ years of experience in Network Engineering and Operations.
Hands-on experience with Aruba Central, Aruba Wireless infrastructure, and Aruba ClearPass Policy Manager in large enterprise or government networks.
Practical experience deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including Panorama management.
Experience integrating Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) and Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) for secure remote connectivity and Zero Trust enforcement.
Extensive experience in enterprise network architecture and topology design, including LAN/WAN, wireless, SD-WAN, and hybrid cloud integrations.
Professional-level networking certification (e.g., CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent; CCNA considered with substantial experience).
Demonstrated experience with:
IPv4 and IPv6 configuration, migration, and troubleshooting
Routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP) and switching technologies (VLANs, STP, VTP)
Network security technologies (VPNs, ACLs, IPsec, SSL/TLS, NGFW)
Cloud networking in AWS, Azure, or GCP
Network automation tools (Python, Ansible, Terraform)
Proven ability to conduct activation, backup, deactivation, and restart of network resources/services with minimal downtime.
Strong background in diagnosing complex LAN/MAN/WAN issues using packet analysis and performance monitoring tools (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds, PRTG).
Excellent documentation skills and ability to produce network diagrams (Visio, Lucidchart).
Clearance
Public Trust or equivalent clearance will be required. Secrete clearance or above would be preferred. Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
