A member of the Executive leadership team, the COO will collaborate closely with the President and the VP of Programs and Communications, who constitute the leadership team, and will manage an Operations Manager and several outside vendors and consultants. The Opportunity:
FCD seeks a strategic, detail-oriented, and collaborative Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a senior thought partner to the President and lead internal operations, including finance, HR, IT, grants management, and administration. This is a pivotal leadership role with broad authority and influence across the organization. The COO will lead efforts to modernize infrastructure, strengthen internal processes, and support a learning culture while ensuring operational excellence. The new COO will join at a time of organizational renewal, with the opportunity to shape how FCD functions and delivers on its ambitious vision. This role calls for a systems thinker, a proactive problem solver, a team builder, and a strategic partner to help steer the Foundation through change and growth.In the first year, key priorities will include evaluating and selecting new vendors—such as the insurance broker and PEO—reviewing employee benefits and making timely recommendations, and, likely in the second year, leading the assessment and upgrade of the grants management system. The COO will be empowered to drive change, streamline operations, and position FCD for long-term success. Key Responsibilities: Organizational Leadership & Strategy: Serve as a core member of the executive leadership team, shaping organizational priorities and enabling strategic execution Act as a close partner and sounding board to the President, supporting organizational planning, risk management, and cross-functional coordination as the organization reinvents existing systems and updates its policies Lead internal efforts to align operational and financial systems with the 2025-2028 strategic framework Cultivate a culture of collaboration, transparency, adaptability, and high performance Ensure operations and policies reflect FCD’s mission, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility Collaborate with the President to prepare reports and materials for Board and committee meetings Attend Board meetings and serve as a key liaison for operational updates and strategy Manage the Foundation’s financial and accounting systems with expert support from vendors to maintain the Foundation’s strong financial position, ensure proper financial controls, and comply with regulatory and reporting requirements Oversee a robust system of financial policies, procedures, and standards. Design and implement improvements as appropriate Oversee budget development & monitoring and the 990-PF and audit processes Advise the President on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, and policies Support the Finance Committee and Audit Committees and present critical information in Committee and Board meetings Support the Investment Committee in performing its responsibilities to oversee the investment advisor, monitor the performance of the Foundation’s assets, and periodically review the investment policy. Organizational Development: Design and lead organizational development activities to foster an organizational culture that emphasizes learning and improvement, collaboration, high performance, and agility in meeting the foundation’s mission Oversee staff recruitment, onboarding, and training. Update and maintain job descriptions Oversee staff performance review, supervision, and professional development systems. Design and implement improvements as appropriate Develop compensation philosophy and salary administration policy and ensure that FCD maintains effective compensation and benefits plans to attract and retain talent Oversee all other Human Resources issues, including legal and policy compliance, supervision of the Professional Employer Organization, and updating the employee handbook Build and support a healthy, inclusive workplace culture with attention to DEIA values and diverse working styles Administration: Lead all administrative functions including grants management, information technology, cyber security, insurance coverage, and office management. Oversee grants administration systems, processes and functions including the terms and conditions for new grants, grant payments, management of grant records, and grant reporting in close collaboration with program staff. Modernize grant making systems and protocols, including exploration of new software solutions, to ensure responsiveness to grantee and programmatic needs, efficiency, compliance, and transparency. Direct IT strategy, security, systems integration, and vendor oversight. Maintain a secure and efficient technology environment and ensure staff are supported with appropriate tools and training. Manage facilities located at 475 Riverside Drive (New York) and office administration to support hybrid work effectively. Review and refresh contracts, manuals, and protocols to effectively and efficiently meet the Foundation’s needs. Negotiate or approve other contracts and agreements for the Foundation. External Engagement: Represent the Foundation externally in operational and financial-related reporting and related responsibilities. Represent the Foundation in various affinity/membership organizations. The Leader: The ideal candidate for this role will be a mission-driven executive with a proven record in nonprofit operations and a passion for advancing equity for children and families. They will bring strategic acumen, excellent people skills, and operational expertise to help guide FCD into its next chapter. Mission Alignment & Values Passion for FCD’s mission and commitment to advancing social justice for young children Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of leadership and operations; experience managing diverse teams and fostering an inclusive, mission-aligned culture Excellent judgment and integrity Leadership Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit operations or philanthropic institutions Ability to work closely with a visionary, fast-paced CEO and a small, high-functioning team and Board Confident partner who can offer strategic pushback, communicate transparently, and support dynamic decision-making Skilled in long-range planning, goal setting, risk management, and change management Management & Execution Proactive, organized, and results-oriented with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects Ability to work nimbly and flexibly with a “roll your sleeves up” mentality Strong management and supervision skills and the ability to effectively set priorities, monitor performance, and multi-task Strong coaching and performance management skills; known for listening and building trust Operational Expertise Experience negotiating and managing business and service contracts, developing and overseeing budgets, and managing audits Strong knowledge of nonprofit finance, HR, IT, compliance, and grants administration Knowledge of cybersecurity, digital tools, and data systems to support operational improvement Proven ability to streamline operations and enhance organizational effectiveness Strategic Thinking & Communication Ability to synthesize information for varied audiences, ask critical questions, and co-create implementation plans Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; high emotional intelligence and cross-cultural fluency; able to relate across levels and identities with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, MPA) preferred. Compensation: Salary range is $200,000-$225,000.
