Under the general supervision of the Director, Nursing & Operations, Perioperative Services, the incumbent will work with other leaders to develop strategies, plans, and outcomes to meet the needs of all stakeholders, including clinicians and staff. Standards, policies, and Human Resources are available for guidance. The Unit Director, Main Operating Room, is responsible for the fiscal, human resources, clinical, materials management, and communication operations of the nursing/outpatient units. The professional role is based on ANA’s Nursing Administration’s Scope of Standards and UCLA’s Nursing Professional Practice Model. The Unit Director oversees all aspects of operations, supporting workflow optimization for staff and patients. Key responsibilities include: Supporting capacity and volume growth of surgical cases Providing direct supervision for clinical nurse leaders (AN II) and support services leaders (MSO), focusing on coaching to develop problem-solving skills to maximize quality, efficiency, and throughput Filling open/vacancy clinical positions Supporting education, operations, and communication with staff through weekly meetings, daily huddles, and active daily management rounds Proposing ideas and processes for improvement to senior leadership Supporting clinical nurse leaders through challenging situations with coaching and leadership development Creating and managing plans to increase efficiency and improve quality Reviewing and supporting onboarding and cross-training of staff Assisting in staffing plans, fiscal management, and safety monitoring Collaborating with Medical Director and Scheduling to review and approve the OR surgical schedule and support capacity planning Enhancing clinical processes and workflows to meet surgical department needs, and developing relationships with surgical department leaders for feedback Optimizing daily workflow by assessing work assignments and engaging with the OR Charge Nurse to support throughput
