General Description
The Finance Director will serve as a key member of the financial leadership team and is accountable for delivering high value-add business analysis as well as defining and reporting meaningful financial and operational metrics that lead to insightful, accurate business decision-making and forecasting. The Finance Director will lead and guide a team that is responsible for developing a financial planning organization. This role will have a comprehensive understanding of key business drivers and sophisticated financial models that enable the team to deliver insightful, value-added analysis. The Finance Director plans, organizes, and manages all aspects of the Finance Department. Prepares timely financial performance and profitability reports, recommendations, and strategies. Adapts financial performance functions, profitability reporting, analytics, and processes for changes in operational activities and strategic goals. Coordinates with other department leaders to drive company initiatives forward. Leads projects across departments, ad hoc reporting requests, business analyses, and other functions. Tasks, Duties, Functions
- Manage, schedule, train, direct, motivate, conduct informal and formal performance and compensation reviews and lead Finance staff.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including bank secrecy and anti-money laundering laws appropriate to the position.
- Foster a positive and engaging work environment for each team member by promoting skill development, coaching for improvement and growth, inspiring others through your words and actions, ensuring positive employee morale throughout Golden 1, and embracing our mission, vision, and core values.
- Develop dynamic methodologies and produce executive-level reports to determine financial performance and profitability across markets, products, channels, and member demographics. Develop dynamic methodologies for identification and performance monitoring of primary drivers impacting operational performance.
- Partner with leadership at all levels to gather reporting requirements to develop new and refine existing profitability reporting. Work with business units to ensure profitability reporting provides actionable insights for their business line, driving enhanced profitability across production channels.
- Maintain a working knowledge of GAAP as it relates to reviewing the Financial Statements for the production, coordination and development of the Financial Plan and supporting budget.
- Oversee and monitor the following:
- The development of financial models around new programs and offerings, including revenue and cost impact of various alternatives. The work with various teams across the organization to develop benchmarking and recommendations. The collaboration with management and other areas of the Credit Union to define, analyze and study financial performance-related issues and data (this includes evaluating operational efficiency and effectiveness by researching and analyzing internal and/or external industry trends, markets, and other operational benchmarks). The gathering, consolidation, preparation, and validation of data for analysis; and the preparation of executive summaries and recommendations. Provide high level and innovative thought leadership to drive improvement; recommend areas for improvement and lead projects to enhance the reporting and analytical infrastructure.
- Financial analysis functions include financial performance and profitability across markets, products, channels, and member demographics as well as enterprise-wide analytics. The compilation of financial management data and reporting for the Credit Union including performance of peers and financial performance, trends, and projections by channels, geo-market, and product.
- Complex financial models, analyses, and spreadsheets that effectively present data and analytical findings as needed and utilize advanced data analytics tools and techniques to build periodic trend analysis reports, presenting insights and findings that are relevant, actionable, and visually appealing to management. The development of written and verbal recommendations and alternative solutions based on the results of analyses, taking into consideration internal and external factors and the Credit Union’s strategic goals and initiatives.
- The research and development efforts undertaken to improve the Credit Union’s products, services, and operations and the interface with various divisions to understand data and underlying operational processes. The gathering and integrating of data and contextual information to design rigorous analyses to support carefully crafted projections. The documented approaches, assumptions, and findings.
- The development of financial performance- written Executive-level reports and presentations.
- Coordinate the assessment of market, product, member, and channel performance to identify gaps and additional value areas to maximize performance. After identifying gaps, work with other departments to determine approaches to maximize performance and enhance profitability.
- Communicates issues timely and via proper escalation channels (i.e., Operational and Member Impact Alerts).
- Continually evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of procedures for direct areas of responsibility and update accordingly.
- Assist VP of Finance in updating corporate policies and processes as assigned.
- Team lead on regulatory examinations, annual independent audits, and internal audits as necessary. Develop remediation plans for any observations that are provided.
- Maintain a current working knowledge of accounting, finance, tax, regulatory, and other related matters.
- Prominent participation on project teams which drive business initiatives forward.
- Exhibit flexibility and willingness to take on new responsibilities and assignments as they are identified by the VP of Finance and to assist with various ad hoc projects as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of the pertinent regulatory requirements and risks inherent to job responsibilities, establish, and maintain control activities that mitigate those risks consistent with the Credit Union’s risk appetite, and ensure operational integrity and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills required to manage and evaluate staff, make presentations, prepare recommendations, perform in-depth analysis, and accomplish other managerial functions as listed.
- Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to skillfully operate an on-line computer terminal and other standard office equipment, such as financial calculators, personal computer, facsimile machine, and telephone.
- INTERNAL: All departments and all levels of management. May deliver reports and presentations to ALCO or other management committees.
- EXTERNAL: External Auditors, regulatory agencies, financial institutions, and vendors.
- EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Finance or related field required. MBA, relevant Master’s Degree, or CFA preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: Eight years or more of progressively responsible finance management experience in a financial institution or equivalent. Three or more years of team lead or management experience. Demonstrated experience working with business units to produce insightful and actionable profitability reporting is required.
- KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Financial management and profitability analytical skills. Knowledge of credit union/banking industry and practical data processing, accounting principles and auditing standards, and business administration. Strong interpersonal skills. Knowledge of existing credit union products, services, and overall operational guidelines. Excellent oral, presentation, and writing skills. Strong research, analytical, planning, and organizational skills. Significant skills in Excel and Microsoft Office tools are needed and experience with SQL, Power BI, SAS, and Python is preferred.
- Prolonged sitting throughout the workday with occasional mobility required.
- Corrected vision within the normal range.
- Hearing within normal range. A device to enhance hearing will be provided if needed.
- Ability to lift 15 lbs. as may be required.
- Occasional movements throughout the department daily to interact with staff, accomplish tasks, etc.
- Minimal travel (1-5 times annually) locally, statewide, and throughout the United States as required to develop and manage all aspects of the Finance area and to attend conferences, seminars, and meetings. Overnight travel and evening schedules included.
- Unusually long work hours may be required to accomplish tasks.
