Tool & Die Maker Apprentice (Mayville)
Metalcraft of Mayville is seeking a Tool & Die Maker Apprentice for 1st shift in our Mayville, WI facility. The Tool and Die Maker Apprentice will be required to complete schooling to obtain a Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certificate. This is scheduled and coordinated through Metalcraft of Mayville and the state of WI. Reporting to the Tool & Die Manager, the Tool & Die Maker Apprentice will analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.
Responsibilities include designing jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products; preparing work by studying assembly instructions, blueprint specifications, and parts lists; gathering parts, subassemblies, tools, and materials; studying blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies; verifying dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications; visualizing and computing dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies based on specifications; setting up and operating conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools; filing, grinding, shimming, and adjusting different parts; fitting and assembling parts; conducting test runs; inspecting finished dies; smoothing and polishing surfaces; lifting, positioning, and securing machined parts; measuring, marking, and scribing metal or plastic stock to lay out machining; developing and designing new tools and dies; cutting, shaping, and trimming blanks or blocks; selecting metals; setting pyrometer controls; setting up and operating drill presses; positioning parts and subassemblies; assembling components; verifying specifications; resolving assembly problems; keeping equipment operational; maintaining a safe and clean working environment; maintaining supplies inventory; conserving resources; documenting actions; contributing to team effort; ensuring compliance with safety standards; and performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include successfully completing a Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certificate; prior experience using Pro-E/Creo or other 3-D modeling software; previous experience working within a highly technical environment; strong basic math skills; previous experience with light electrical assembly and/or heavy equipment assembly; previous forklift experience; exposure to a Lean manufacturing environment; basic knowledge in blueprint reading and torque values; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work efficiently in a team and coordinate work with other departments; aptitude to take orders and execute them efficiently; high school degree, diploma, or GED equivalent qualification from an accredited institution; demonstrated detail orientation, self-motivation skills, and ability to multi-task; good finger and hand dexterity; and equal opportunity employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
